COMMERCE DEPARTMENT 14th Street Constitution Avenue NW, Washington DC 20230, (202) 482-2000. Major source of information on business activity, both international and domestic. Domestic activity can be tracked through publications of the Census Bureau (see below for location), which surveys business every five years by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), and forecasts activity for each segment each year (U.S. Industrial Outlook, available from NTIS). Adhesives, SIC 2891, report included in Miscellaneous Chemical Products, last surveyed in 1992. Manufacturers are required by law to respond to surveys, but not every producer of adhesive and sealant products is represented because of nuances in the conduct of the survey. However, lots of good information for comparative valuation of business, workforce output, etc. [Pg.52]

If the composition of the waste stream is known, then the theoretical oxygen demand can be calculated from the appropriate stoichiometric equations. As a first level of approximation, we can assume that this theoretical oxygen demand would be equal to the COD. Then, experience with domestic sewage indicates that the average ratio of COD to BOD will be on the order 1.5 to 2. The following example will help to clarify these relationships. [Pg.309]

Liquid fuels. Industrial burners for liquid fuels usually atomize the fuels in hot air so that droplets will evaporate during combustion. For more volatile fuels such as kerosine, vaporizing burners of various types are employed, usually for domestic purposes. [Pg.70]

Calor gas, Calor propane The trade name for a liquified petroleum gas (LPG) sold in cylinders for domestic and industrial healing. Calor gas is the name used for commercial butane while commercial propane is sold as Calor propane. [Pg.77]

A common domestic use is the removal of rust or blood stains from white materials, e.g. cotton. [Pg.292]

I6I C. Warfarin baits need contain only 0 025% active principle, and rats are killed after ingesting about 5 doses the bait can be left down and the risk of acute toxicity to man or domestic animals is not serious. In common with other coumarin derivatives, warfarin reduces the clotting power of blood and death is caused by haemorrhages initiated by any slight injury. Warfarin is a vitamin K antagonist, and large oral doses of the vitamin can be given as an antidote. [Pg.425]

In a general manner, diesel engines, jet engines, and domestic or industrial burners operate with lean mixtures and their performance is relatively insensitive to the equivalence ratio. On the other hand, gasoline engines require a fuel-air ratio close to the stoichiometric. Indeed, a too-rich mixture leads to an excessive exhaust pollution from CO emissions and unburned hydrocarbons whereas a too-lean mixture produces unstable combustion (reduced driveability and misfiring). [Pg.180]

Hydrotreating the LCO increases its cetane number to around 40 (Table 5.16), but this technique needs large amounts of hydrogen for rather mediocre results, the aromatics being converted into naphthenes which are still not easily auto-ignited. That is why LCO is sent to the domestic heating oil pool. [Pg.223]

Solubility of water in jet fuels as a function of temperature (Jet A is a variant] of Jet Al, used in the USA for domestic flights. Jet A has a freezing point higher than that of Jet Al). ... [Pg.228]

For other physical properties, the specification differences between diesel fuel and home-heating oil are minimal. Note only that there is no minimum distillation end point for heating oil, undoubtedly because tbe problem of particulate emissions is much less critical in domestic burners than in an engine. [Pg.233]

The flowscheme of the typical refinery during the period 1950-1970 was essentially focused on the production of gasoline, diesel oil, domestic heating oil and industrial fuel-oil. Except for heavy naphtha, the product streams underwent no deep conversion. [Pg.406]

If the gas purchaser is a company which distributes gas to domestic and industrial end users, he typically wants the producer to provide... [Pg.194]

This situation has recently arisen in the UK where competition for gas sales has been encouraged. Gas producers can enter into direct agreements with consumers (ranging from power stations to domestic users), using the national distribution grid if necessary. The impact of this change on gas price has been significant a reduction of around 60% in the period of a year. [Pg.195]

Market forces determine the demand for a product, and the demand will be used to forecast the sales of hydrocarbons. This will be one of the factors considered by some governments when setting the production targets for the oil company. For example, much of the gas produced in the South China Sea is liquefied and exported by tanker to Japan for industrial and domestic use the contract agreed with the Japanese purchaser will drive the production levels set by the National Oil Company. [Pg.346]

The demand for domestic gas changes seasonally in temperate climates, and production levels reflect this change. For example a sudden cold day in Northern Europe causes a sharply increased requirement for gas, and gas sales contracts in this region will allow the purchaser to demand an instant increase (up to a certain maximum) from the supplier. To safeguard for seasonal swings, imported gas is frequently stored in underground... [Pg.346]

However, the deposition of salts from temporarily hard water in boilers, and so on (for example the fur found in kettles) makes it desirable to soften such water for domestic and industrial use. Very... [Pg.273]

Several forms of apparatus employing electrical heati iig wi 11 be described. A simple form may be readily constructed from a domestic electric iron of 400-500 watts rating. The handle is removed, and two holes of 8 mm. diameter are drilled through the base (ca. 11 mm. thick) so that they meet in the centre of the block. One hole is for a 360° thermometer (small bulb) the other hole is spare and can be used for comparison with a standard thermometer. The heater is mounted on a sheet of thick asbestos board which is fixed to an appropriate wooden base. The wires from the heating unit are connected to two insulated terminals fitted on the board (Fig. 11, 11, 1). The rate of heating is controlled by either of the following methods ... [Pg.80]

Uses. Furfuryl alcohol is widely used as a monomer in manufacturing furfuryl alcohol resins, and as a reactive solvent in a variety of synthetic resins and appHcations. Resins derived from furfuryl alcohol are the most important appHcation for furfuryl alcohol in both utihty and volume. The final cross-linked products display outstanding chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. They are also heat-stable and remarkably resistant to acids, alkaUes, and solvents. Many commercial resins of various compositions and properties have been prepared by polymerization of furfuryl alcohol and other co-reactants such as furfural, formaldehyde, glyoxal, resorcinol, phenoHc compounds and urea. In 1992, domestic furfuryl alcohol consumption was estimated at 47 million pounds (38). [Pg.80]

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol also has been cleared for use in California under Rule 66. It meets the rigid specifications for uv degradation in environmentally sensitive areas. In addition to domestic use, a substantial amount of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is used as a solvent for agricultural chemicals in Europe. [Pg.82]

Grades and grade requirements for all U.S. wheat classes are given in Table 2. Values of the total domestic consumption of wheat products as foods in the United States are Hsted in Ref. 50. [Pg.354]

Nearly all domestic production of U.S. rice is located in the midsouth and California. Arkansas is the leading rice producing state with 40.6% of the national total in 1988. Following Arkansas in order of production share are California (18.5%), Louisiana (15.1%), Texas (14.6%), Mississippi (8.6%), and Missouri (2.6%). [Pg.358]

The three principal domestic uses for rice in 1988 were direct food (61%), processed food (18%), and beer (20%). The direct food use figure includes the conventional white milled rice plus specialty rice products (parboiled, precooked, aromatic, brown, and prepackaged mixes) shipped directly from the rice mills. The specialty products account for approximately one-fifth of the direct food use. Approximately two-thirds of the direct food use rice is ultimately distributed to consumers through retail outlets and one-third through food service outlets. [Pg.358]

The rhodamines are economically the most important amino-substituted xandiene dyes. The total sales of Rhodamine B in the United States in 1980 were over 10. The total domestic market for duorescein and uranine was estimated to be over 0.5 x 10 /yr. [Pg.407]

Anhydride has been used for the illegal manufacture of heroin [561-27-3] (acetyknorphine) and certain other addictive dmgs. Regulations on acetic anhydtide commerce have long been a feature of European practice. After passage in 1988 of the Chemical Diversion and Trafficking Act, there is also U.S. control. Orders for as much as 1,023 kg acetic anhydtide, for either domestic sale or export, require a report to the Department of Justice, Dmg Enforcement Administration (54). [Pg.79]
