We can reconstruct the sequence of events. London and Alexander Sokolov knew each other, for they worked in the Imperial Institute. When London began his work on the possibility that a person otherwise blind could see something on a fluorescent screen, he quite naturally used Sokolov s unfortunate son as a subject. Over innumerable cups of tea, as Russian novelists tell us, London and Sokolov discussed their work, and eventually one of them suggested that they might collaborate in a bit of gastroenterological research. The result was that Sokolov s domestic tragedy indirectly led to publication of more than 40 papers on digestion and absorption of the major foodstuffs.
