DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT

The shorter oil-length alkyds are quicker drying, harder finishes which are most suitable for works application. The very short oil-length alkyds are used for stove finishes on industrial and domestic equipment, etc. 

Major uses of the ferritic steels have been on motor vehicles as trim and in domestic equipment such as cutlery and hollow ware, but use has also been made in refrigerators, washing machines and on sinks and similar fittings. Some types would no doubt find much wider application in the chemical field and other fields where their superior corrosion resistance would be a considerable advantage if it was not for the fact that the austenitic types have advantages (sometimes considerable) in fabrication. However, the availability of the low interstitial weldable types and the super ferritics is increasing in scope. 

The two amino resins in common use are urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde, and most stoving finishes contain one or the other. They have many properties in common urea formaldehyde, however, while substantially cheaper, has poor exterior durability, whereas melamine formaldehyde imparts excellent exterior durability. As they are both water white they give white finishes of excellent colour, with the additional advantage of retaining their colour on over-stoving. Urea formaldehyde is commonly used in conjunction with a lesser quantity of an alkyd to give finishes with excellent resistance to water and mild chemicals, which are therefore well suited to use on domestic equipment, e.g. washing machines. 

The cured resins are stable at 150-200°C depending on cross-linking agents used. They are resistant to chemical attack and are flexible and strongly adhesive. They are used as surface coatings and yield an excellent enamel after esterification which is used for floors, walls, tanks, domestic equipment, etc.

Static inverters are used to convert DC voltage into AC voltage. The simplest forms of inverters prodnce an output waveform that is rectangular, as a result of the simple switching process described in snb-section 15.4.1. A rectangular waveform can be used to feed some types of AC equipment e.g. incandescent lamps, domestic equipment such as kitchen mixers and kettles. Equipment that contains electronic devices may not function properly if their supply waveform is non-sinusoidal. Their timing circuits and pulse generating systems may be disturbed by the shape of the waveform or its derivative.

These can be considered as reacting by both routes, since the unreacted acid in the alkyd may take part. Epoxy resin of molecular weight 900 n = 2) is used, since alkyd-epoxy resin compatibility is poor at higher molecular weights. Stoving is at temperatures of 150°C and above. Improvements over alkyd-melamine finishes occur in adhesion, flexibility, chemical and water resistance and mar and abrasion resistance. Uses are similar, particularly where finishing industrial and domestic equipment is concerned, since the excellent adhesion of the epoxy resin can allow the user to omit a primer.

Domestic equipment should not be overlooked for examples of active enhancement. The domestic washing machine spins at high speed to enhance water ranoval, while the novel Dyson machine also agitates the load, to enhance contact between the clothes and cleaning medium. 

The resultant coatings have good colour, hardness and heat resistance and are used for industrial and domestic equipment and containers. 

There are many other standards that offer guidance on the safe design of electrical systems and equipment. It is impracticable to list them all here but two are worthy of mention. BS EN 60204 Safety of machinery - electrical parts of machinery, is a CEN/CENELEC Type B standard (see Chapter 13) with comprehensive guidance on electrical safety principles relating to machinery. The BS EN 60335 series of standards provides equally comprehensive guidance relating to electrical safety in commercial and domestic equipment such as food mixers, meat sheers, white goods, fly electrocutors and so on. 

It is used in the chemical industry, and in power and energy generation, environmental technology, civil engineering, and in domestic equipment. Stainless steels are iron-based alloys with at least 12% Cr. Increasing the chromium content and addition of other alloying elements provides stainless steels with a wide range of corrosion resistance. 

Cellulose propionate is hard and dimensionally stable and has good surface finish. The product is comparatively unused in the UK, but in the USA it is employed in portable radios and domestic equipment housings.

It is not surprising that these end-uses are dominated by the general rubber goods which includes parts for cars and other means of transport, for washing machines and other domestic equipment and a wide range of industrial mouldings.
