White goods, domestic

White goods, components for the wet side of domestic washing machines, dryers and dishwashers refrigerator parts, floor care and small appliances, house wares, kitchenware, good clarity parts, jug kettles toaster and iron parts... 

Among the most thoughtful of these accounts, and one which places emphasis on the impact of new domestic technologies or white goods, is that of Bose (1982) writing about modern North American households. 

APME estimates that WEEE plastics comprise just over 3% of the 19 million tonnes of collectible post-consumer plastics in Europe. This quantity, of around 733,000 tonnes is projected to rise significantly in the future. EEE is defined by the directive as all appliances dependant on electric currents or EM fields in order to work, and which use AC up to lOOOV or DC up to 1500V . This, of course, covers, business machines, telecommunications equipment, brown and white goods, small hand-held domestic appliances plus medical and other equipment such as sewing machines and household leisure and garden goods. 

In the case of connectors for white goods, domestic appliances and IT applications Tyco is reported to be using DuPont Thermx CG923 which combines the properties of the CG023 composition with a UL 94 VO classification. 

Electroluminescent displays are made in Wales by Pelikon at its Cardiff plant where the company specialise in control panel displays. These thin plastic electroluminescent displays comprise a series of segments, each of which is a hidden membrane switch which is identified by an icon above the area of contact. Multi-function touch regions can be incorporated as well a capacitive touch on/off facility. Target markets include the white goods domestic appliance sector. 

There are many other standards that offer guidance on the safe design of electrical systems and equipment. It is impracticable to list them all here but two are worthy of mention. BS EN 60204 Safety of machinery - electrical parts of machinery, is a CEN/CENELEC Type B standard (see Chapter 13) with comprehensive guidance on electrical safety principles relating to machinery. The BS EN 60335 series of standards provides equally comprehensive guidance relating to electrical safety in commercial and domestic equipment such as food mixers, meat sheers, white goods, fly electrocutors and so on. 

The key properties here are hardness and wear resistance, ability to. stand minor knocks and dents without cracking and resistance to various domestic chemicals. These vary with type of appliance, e.g. detergent solutions are important for washing machines, while a fridge will be required to withstand fruit juices, ketchup and polishes. Good colour and appearance in white and mainly pastel shades will be expected. Corrosion resistance is required, especially for washing machines, and domestic appliances frequently have to withstand humid conditions in kitchens. 

Tt is the ritual anthropophagy of certain Africans, that although they do not lack meat from domestically raised or hunted animals, they will eat the heart of a courageous warrior, the hand of an adroit man, or the brain of an intelligent man. VFe gorge ourselves on them in the manner the white man eats his good god... I one of them will naively explain to an indignant missionary.
