Domestic assessment

Industry has standardized procedures for the quantitative sensory assessment of the perceived olfactory intensity of indoor malodors and their relationship to the deodorant efficacy of air freshener products. Synthetic malodors are used for these evaluation purposes. These malodors should be hedonicaHy associated to the "real" malodor, and must be readily available and of consistent odor quaUty. These malodors should be tested in various concentrations and be representative of intensities experienced under normal domestic conditions. [Pg.293]

Synthetic fuels derived from shale or coal will have to supplement domestic suppHes from petroleum someday, and aircraft gas turbine fuels producible from these sources have been assessed. Shale-derived fuels can meet current specifications if steps are taken to reduce the nitrogen levels. However, extracting kerogen from shale rock and denitrogenating the jet fuel are energy-intensive steps compared with petroleum refining it has been estimated that shale jet fuel could be produced at about 70% thermal efficiency compared with 95% efficiency for petroleum (25). Such a difference represents much higher cost for a shale product. [Pg.417]

A risk estimate indicates Uie likelihood of occurrence of the different types of health or enviroinnental effects in exposed populations. Risk assessment should include both liuimn health and environmental evaluations (i.c., impacts on ecosystems). Ecological impacts include actual or potential effects on plants and animals (other than domesticated species). The number produced from the risk characleriznlion, representing the probability of adi crse... [Pg.294]

It is easy enough to describe and even quantify domestic energy use as it has changed over the centuries and particularly since 1900, but it is much more difficult to assess how these changes have affected society, culture, and individuals for better or for worse. Ruth Schwartz Cowan argued in More Work for Mother (1983) that this new domestic technology resulted in the disappearance of domestic ser-... [Pg.348]

In designing the water storage capacity, account should be taken of the pattern of water usage for the premises and, where possible, to assess the likely frequency and duration of breakdown from the water authority mains. When dealing with domestic water storage, this is usually provided to meet a 24-hour demand. [Pg.25]

It is an accepted practice when assessing the environmental effects of pollution on man and his place of abode to use a divisor of 40 (some agencies may divide by 30) against the long-term exposure level in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA). Much lower exposure limits are necessary due to the much longer term of exposure in the domestic situation. The section of the population most likely to spend long periods of time in the home are those most susceptible to the detrimental effects of pollutants, i.e. the young, the elderly or the infirm. For short-term exposure the known data can be used directly from the list or from animal-exposure data. [Pg.754]

The general assessment indicates that the pharmaceutical industry experiences problems with transparency of dmg registration in two out of the 10 countries— Cypms and Uganda. The main problems cited involve communication between the DRA and the industry regarding clarity of procedures and adequacy of official explanations for the rejection of an application. In Cypms, the Dmg Council also raised issues concerning the fairness of treatment of foreign versus domestic industry, and the arbitration of contradictory quality analysis results provided by different laboratories, both belonging to the Dmg Council. [Pg.87]

A new 510(k) paradigm provides guidance for sponsors of 510(k)s to consider and use national and international standards and a mechanism for declaration of conformity assessment criteria for these standards. It is expected that many domestic and international standards will address, in part or full, certain aspects of... [Pg.177]

In an unprecedented step, the European Parliament has voted to ban two chemicals for which risk assessments are still pending. The chemicals, octabromodiphenylether and decabromodiphenyl ether, were lumped together with penta-BDE during a debate on the EC s proposed ban on that chemical, which is based on a completed risk assessment. All three chemicals are used as flame retardants. Parliamentarians backed the call to extend a ban on penta-BDE to octa-BDE, which is used in office equipment and domestic electrical appliances, by mid-2003. It is claimed that initial results of the ongoing risk assessments already indicate that the chemical is an environmental and public health hazard. MEPs have set a 2006 deadline for banning deca-BDE, adding that the ban should not come into force if the final results of the risk assessment show that deca-BDE is harmless. EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT... [Pg.61]

Prior to 9/11, an assessment of chemical plant site security by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) was considered by many to be the most comprehensive analysis that was publicly available. ATSDR researchers reviewed national statistics on domestic terrorism compiled by the FBI in 1995 and interviewed security staff from facilities and potential targets in one community with numerous chemical plants. Reviewers found the following concerns ... [Pg.8]
