Domestic plastics production

Polymer science and technology have developed tremendously over the last few decades, and the production of polymers and plastics products has increased at a remarkable pace. By the end of 2000, nearly 200 million tons per year of plastic materials were produced worldwide (about 2% of the wood used, and nearly 5% of the oil harvested) to fulfill the ever-growing needs of the plastic age in the industrialized world plastic materials are used at a rate of nearly 100 kg per person per year. Plastic materials with over 250 billion per year contribute about 4% to the gross domestic product in the United States. Plastics have no counterpart in other materials in terms of weight, ease of fabrication, efficient utilization, and economics.

Each year, over 100 billion aluminum cans, billions of glass bottles, and thousands of tons of paper and plastic are used in storing and dispensing soft drinks, juices, processed foods, grains, beer and other products. In the United States approximately 5.5 million tons of paper are consumed each year in packaging materials, which represents about 15% of the total annual domestic paper production. 

It is difficult to come to terms with the consequences of gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8% per year in China where the economy is forecast to maintain this growth rate over the next few years. China s population is currently around 1.3 billion and its annual consumption of plastics products is approximately 1 kg per head compared with a 40 kg per head figure for Western Europe. 

Steady rise of volume of polymeric production and expansion of usage of polymeric materials is inevitably accompanied by accumulation of industrial and domestic plastic waste materials, which lead to the increase of economic and ecological problems. 

Another significant appHcation for amyl alcohols is for production of amyl acetates. Production of amyl acetates in 1987 is estimated to have been 4.5-5.5 X 10 t about 50% of the domestic demand is for lacquers (150). Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Company Inc. is the only U.S. producer. 

DSM America produces caprolactam only for merchant sales, both domestic and foreign. BASF is a customer, foUowiag acquisition of Enka s United States fiber and plastics plants, and also a captive producer of caprolactam. AUied-Signal s production is primarily captive for nylon-6 fibers and plastics, but substantial amounts are supplied to the export market.
