Economic Aspects and Uses. Production and pricing information for Na2S through 1991 are Hsted in Table 2. U.S. production of sodium sulfide increased rapidly from 1965 through 1972 and then began to decrease. The last year that the U.S. Bureau of the Census released official production figures was in 1974 because at that time there were only three producers of sodium sulfide. Estimates indicate that 1991 production fell to the levels of the late 1950s. List prices have increased since 1974 as sulfur and sodium hydroxide prices have increased.

In 1972, 5.68 million kg of methyl parathion were exported from the United States (HSDB 1999). Exports dropped to 3.01 million kg in 1984 (Bureau of the Census 1984). However, in 1985, exports inereased to 4.14 million kg (Bureau of the Census 1986). No reeent import/export data addressing methyl parathion are available.

Chronological Age. Because of this wide variation within the elderly population, it is difficult to devise a catch-all age one must attain to be considered elderly. Within the government, there also appears to be a problem of consistently defining this age group. Table 2, which lists a variety of federally funded programs and their corresponding age criteria, illustrates this point quite well. Table 3 lists what seems to be one of the better classification systems that has been devised [5], As well as being the system currently used by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, it is often implemented in studies that specifically deal with elderly populations [6,7].
