Best results are obtained if the only acid present is part of the copolymer. Domestic appliance finishes cure in 20 minutes at 177° C and coil coatings in 1 minute, with the metal reaching a peak temperature of 230-240° C. Temperatures can be reduced, with some loss in properties, by the addition of a little acid catalyst, which is usually required when the film is hardened with small amounts of M/F. Other resins used to modify the film are epoxies, polyesters and alkyds.

Yet another option for domestic appliances is to make the appliance from precoated coil. The appliance has to be designed to minimise the problem of unprotected cut edges. Electroplated zinc-coated steel, pretreated, primed and finished with special polyester-melamine, is used. The finish is designed to be hard at room temperature, yet accept bending and forming, probably, but not necessarily, at somewhat higher temperatures (ca. 60°C). 

The choice of binders for the topcoat depends on the end use of the coil-coated metals. Acrylic topcoats were developed earliest, and are widely used indoors for surfaces that are not exposed to water, chemicals, or mechanical stress. Polyester coil coatings provide a good general-purpose finish, and can be used for a wide range of applications (e.g., car interiors and accessories, caravan exteriors, domestic appliances). Tough, abrasion-resistant, and durable general-purpose finishes can be formulated with polyurethane and polyester resins in combination. 

Zinc alloys can he easily electroplated or painted to give a decorative or protective finish. Uses include the mass production of car parts such as door handles, lock parts, carhurettors, fuel pumps and lamp units, as well as camera parts, power tools, clock parts and domestic appliances.

The major objective is to obtain coatings with a dual purpose that of decoration, to impart a lustrous appearance and that of protection against corrosion.
