Biogenous

Ocean Basins. Ocean basins are primarily formed from oceanic basalts and maybe interspersed with continental remnants, ridges, seamounts, or volcanic islands rising from the depths. Average water depth is around 4000 m but the most significant mineralization is generally found at 5000 m for manganese nodules, 4000 m for biogenic oozes, and 3000 m for hydrothermal metalliferous sulfides. The area is poorly explored, however. [Pg.286]

Biogenic Ma.teria.ls, Deep ocean calcareous or siUceous oo2es are sediments containing >30% of biogenic material. Foraminifera, the skeletal remains of calcareous plankton, are found extensively in deep equatorial waters above the calcium carbonate compensation depth of 4000 to 5000 m. [Pg.287]

MicrocrystaUine Silicas. Various microcrystalline (cryptocrystalline) materials such as flint, chert, and diatomaceous earth are found ia nature (see Diatomite). These may arise from amorphous silica, often of biogenic origin, which undergoes compaction and microcrysta11i2ation over geologic time. [Pg.476]

A new cyanide dye for derivatizing thiols has been reported (65). This thiol label can be used with a visible diode laser and provide a detection limit of 8 X 10 M of the tested thiol. A highly sensitive laser-induced fluorescence detector for analysis of biogenic amines has been developed that employs a He—Cd laser (66). The amines are derivatized by naphthalenedicarboxaldehyde in the presence of cyanide ion to produce a cyanobenz[ isoindole which absorbs radiation at the output of He—Cd laser (441.6 nm). Optimization of the detection system yielded a detection limit of 2 x 10 M. [Pg.245]

Dry Deposition. Dry deposition occurs in two steps the transport of pollutants to the earth s surface, and the physical and chemical interaction between the surface and the pollutant. The first is a fluid mechanical process (see Fluid mechanics), the second is primarily a chemical process, and neither is completely characterized at the present time. The problem is confounded by the interaction between the pollutants and biogenic surfaces where pollutant uptake is enhanced or retarded by plant activity that varies with time (47,48). It is very difficult to measure the depositional flux of pollutants from the atmosphere, though significant advances were made during the 1980s and early 1990s (49,50). [Pg.382]
