Biogenic element carbon

Abstract In this chapter the biogeochemical processes in the Bohai Sea are described. The main contents deal with the distributions, transformation, and their controlling factors of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon, and pollutants such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the seawaters and sediments. In the Bohai Sea, human activity and riverine input are the most important controlling processes in the variation of biogenic elements and pollutants. 

Later in this book, we wiU introduce a series of other special properties which make carbon a unique biogenic element. 

From a geochemical perspective, sinking POM is an important mechanism by which carbon and other elements are transferred from the sea surfece into the deep sea and onto the sediments. This transport is termed the biological pump and includes the sinking of inorganic particles that are of biogenic origin, namely calcium carbonate and silicate shells.
