QHgNiOiS. Colourless crystals, m.p. 164 5-166-5" C. It is usually prepared by treating p-acetamidobenzenesulphonyl chloride with ammonia, and hydrolysing the acetyl derivative to the base. Used for the treatment of streptococcal infections, gonorrhoea, meningococcal meningitis and urinary infections. Liable to cause unpleasant reactions, such as nausea, cyanosis and skin rashes. [Pg.377]

Toxic levels of foHc acid [59-30-3] are ca 20 mg/d in infants, and probably approach 400 mg/d in adults. The body seems able to tolerate very large intakes of ascorbic acid [50-81-7] (vitamin C) without iH effect, but levels in excess of 9 g/d have been reported to cause increases in urinary oxaHc acid excretion. Urinary and blood uric acid also rise as a result of high intakes of ascorbic acid, and these factors may increase the tendency for formation of kidney or bladder stones. AH other water-soluble vitamins possess an even wider margin of safety and present no practical problem (82). [Pg.479]

This compound has antihistaminic activity and is usehil in the therapy of motion sickness. It may also be effective in the control of post-operative nausea and vomiting. It is classified as FDA Category B for Pregnancy, ie, no demonstrated risks shown in animal studies however, no controlled trials in pregnant women. Large doses may cause drowsiness and dry mouth owing to decreased secretion of saUva. [Pg.204]

Dronabinol is indicated for the treatment of the nausea and vomiting produced by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond adequately to other conventional treatments. This agent may be habit forming and can be expected to produce disturbing psychomimetic reactions. It should only be used under close supervision. [Pg.204]

Acute intoxication with DHBs occurs mainly by the oral route symptoms are close to those induced by phenol poisoning including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tachypnea, pulmonary edema, and CNS excitation with possibiUty of seizures followed by CNS depression. Convulsions are more frequent with catechol as well as hypotension due to peripheral vasoconstriction. Hypotension and hepatitis seem more frequent with hydroquinone and resorcinol. The toxicity of 2,4-pentanedione is shown in Tables 3 and 11 to be similar to mesityl oxide, and greater than most other 1,2- or 1,4-diketones or monoketones. Inhalation of low levels of 2,4-pentanedione can cause nausea, eye contact can induce stinging, and recurrent exposure to high concentrations (300—400 ppm) can adversely affect the central nervous system and immune system (325). [Pg.499]

Methanol is not classified as carcinogenic, but can be acutely toxic if ingested 100—250 mL may be fatal or result in blindness. The principal physiological effect is acidosis resulting from oxidation of methanol to formic acid. Methanol is a general irritant to the skin and mucous membranes. Prolonged skin contact with methanol vapor or Hquid can cause dermatitis. Methanol vapor can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation, nausea, headaches, and dizziness. [Pg.280]

Other Potassium and Sodium Disorders. Potassium and/or sodium deficiency can lead to muscle weakness and sodium deficiency to nausea. Hyperkalemia resulting in cardiac arrest is possible from 18 g/d of potassium combined with inadequate kidney function. Faulty utilisation of K" and/or Na" can lead to Addison s or Cushing s disease. [Pg.380]

Toxicology. The acute oral and dermal toxicity of naphthalene is low with LD q values for rats from 1780—2500 mg/kg orally (41) and greater than 2000 mg/kg dermally. The inhalation of naphthalene vapors may cause headache, nausea, confusion, and profuse perspiration, and if exposure is severe, vomiting, optic neuritis, and hematuria may occur (28). Chronic exposure studies conducted by the NTP ia mice for two years showed that naphthalene caused irritation to the nasal passages, but no other overt toxicity was noted. Rabbits that received 1—2 g/d of naphthalene either orally or hypodermically developed changes ia the lens of the eye after a few days, foUowed by definite opacity of the lens after several days (41). Rare cases of such corneal epithelium damage ia humans have been reported (28). Naphthalene can be irritating to the skin, and hypersensitivity does occur. [Pg.486]

Codeine, mol wt 299.3, is a significantly less potent analgesic than morphine, requiring 60 mg (0.20 mmol) to equal the effectiveness of 10 mg (0.04 mmol) of morphine. However, codeine is orally effective, and it is less addictive and associated with less nausea than morphine. Codeine is used as an antitussive agent, although newer, nonaddictive agents are preferred (see Expectorants, antitussives, and related agents). [Pg.381]

Morphine has certain undesirable side effects. Among these are respiratory depression, nausea, and vomiting, depression of the cough reflex, cardiovascular depression and hypotension, smooth muscle contraction (constipation), and histamine release (93). Morphine s onset of action, duration, and low therapeutic indices have prompted a search for a more effective opiate iv anesthetic. Extreme simplification of the complex morphine molecule has resulted in anilido —piperidines, the fentanyl class of extremely potent opiate iv anesthetics (118,119). [Pg.411]

Common side effects of theophylline therapy include headache, dyspepsia, and nausea. More serious side effects such as lethal seizures or cardiac arrythmias can occur if blood levels are too high. Many derivatives of theophylline have been prepared in an effort to discover an analogue without these limitations (60,61). However, the most universal solution has resulted from the development of reHable sustained release formulations. This technology limits the peaks and valleys in semm blood levels that occur with frequent dosing of immediate release formulations. ControUed release addresses the problems inherent in a dmg which is rapidly metabolized but which is toxic at levels ( >20 7g/mL) that are only slightly higher than the therapeutically efficacious ones (10—20 p.g/mL). Furthermore, such once-a-day formulations taken just before bedtime have proven especially beneficial in the control of nocturnal asthma (27,50,62). [Pg.440]
