With methanol

Prepared by heating aniline with methanol and a little sulphuric acid at 2I5 C.

When ethanoi is present, the risk of separation is much less than with methanol. Nevertheless, the ethanol should be relatively anhydrous (less than 3000 ppm water) moreover, if a fuel containing ethanol comes in contact with a water layer, a migration of ethanol toward the water is observed creating a fuel quality problem manifested by lower octane number and an environmental quality problem in that the water will need to be treated. Distribution of ethanol-based fuels requires extra precaution to ensure dryness in distribution systems.

Additional notes - Nitromethane is found in high performance RC model fuel, usually as a mixture with methanol and various strange lubricants. One particular brand, found at a local hobby shop, was 55% nitromethane. 

A solution of 1.05 M diborane in THF (25 ml, 26 mraol) was added slowly to a stirred suspension of 3-acetyl-5-hydroxy-2-methylindole (1.0 g, 5.3 mmol) in THF (10 ml). After hydrogen evolution ceased, the mixture was heated at reflux for I h, cooled and poured into acetone (75 ml). The mixture was heated briefly to boiling and then evaporated in vacuo. The residue was heated with methanol (50ml) for 20min. The solution was concentrated and 3NHC1 (40ml) was added. The mixture was extracted with ether and the extracts dried (MgSO ) and evaporated to yield a yellow oil. Vacuum sublimation or recrystallization yielded pure product (0.76 g, 82%).

Students determine the concentrations of caffeine, acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, and salicylic acid in several analgesic preparations using both CZE (70 mM borate buffer solution, UV detection at 210 nm) and HPLC (C18 column with 3% v/v acetic acid mixed with methanol as a mobile phase, UV detection at 254 nm). 

With aldehydes, primary alcohols readily form acetals, RCH(OR )2. Acetone also forms acetals (often called ketals), (CH2)2C(OR)2, in an exothermic reaction, but the equiUbrium concentration is small at ambient temperature. However, the methyl acetal of acetone, 2,2-dimethoxypropane [77-76-9] was once made commercially by reaction with methanol at low temperature for use as a gasoline additive (5). Isopropenyl methyl ether [116-11-OJ, useful as a hydroxyl blocking agent in urethane and epoxy polymer chemistry (6), is obtained in good yield by thermal pyrolysis of 2,2-dimethoxypropane. With other primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, the equiUbrium is progressively less favorable to the formation of ketals, in that order. However, acetals of acetone with other primary and secondary alcohols, and of other ketones, can be made from 2,2-dimethoxypropane by transacetalation procedures (7,8). Because they hydroly2e extensively, ketals of primary and especially secondary alcohols are effective water scavengers. 

Chlorine and bromine add vigorously, giving, with proper control, high yields of 1,2-dihaloethyl ethers (224). In the presence of an alcohol, halogens add as hypohaUtes, which give 2-haloacetals (225,226). With methanol and iodine this is used as a method of quantitative analysis, titrating unconsumed iodine with standard thiosulfate solution (227). 

Another method used commercially is to grind the gel and extract the water (and residual monomer) with methanol. The methanol is dried and recycled. The dry polymer is ground and screened. 

Skin contact with methanol may present a greater health threat than skin contact with gasoline and diesel fuel and is being evaluated.
