Nausea alleviation

ANTIASTHMA DRUGS. Some antia tiimadrugp may cause an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Having the patient take frequent sips of water, suck on sugarless candy, or chew gum helps to alleviate die problem. If dizziness occurs, the patient may require assistance with ambulation. For nausea, the nurse provides frequent small meals, rather than three larger meals. [Pg.345]

The symptoms of simple nausea and vomiting are self-limited or can be relieved with minimal treatment. Monitor patients for adequate oral intake and alleviation of nausea and vomiting. [Pg.304]

The therapeutic dose of acamprosate is 666 mg orally three times daily, and it is supplied as a 333 mg tablet. It can be started at the full dose in most patients without titration. It differs from disulfiram and naltrexone in that it is excreted by the kidneys without liver metabolism. Consequently, it is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than or equal to 30 mL/minute), and dose reduction is necessary when the creatinine clearance is between 30 and 50 mL/minute. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and include nausea and diarrhea. Rates of suicidal thoughts were also increased in patients treated for 1 year with acamprosate (2.4%) versus placebo (0.8%). If necessary the total daily dose maybe decreased by 1 to 3 tablets (333-999 mg) per day to alleviate side effects. [Pg.545]

How does physical exercise alleviate depression One possibility is that it increases the release of endorphins that produce a sense of well-being, sometimes referred to as the runner s high . Another possibility is that it is a placebo effect. But even if it is a placebo effect, consider the differences between exercise and antidepressants in side effects. Side effects of antidepressants include sexual dysfunction, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, drowsiness, seizures, diarrhoea and headaches. Side effects of physical exercise include enhanced libido, better sleep, decreased body fat, improved muscle tone, greater life expectancy, increased strength and endurance and improved cholesterol levels. So if both antidepressants and exercise work by means of the placebo effect, which placebo would you prefer ... [Pg.172]

Psychiatrists most often use these medications to treat ADHD, narcolepsy, and refractory depression. Conservative measures are often sufficient to counteract the side effects of increased dopamine. When insomnia or nausea is a problem, changing the dose schedule can be helpful. Avoiding or reducing evening doses can alleviate insomnia taking the medications after meals can lessen nausea and upset... [Pg.364]

Phenothiazines have a diverse use in medicine. They are primarily used as antipsy-chotics. Despite the fact that they do not cure the disease, they reduce psychotic symptoms to a point where the patient is provided with a better sense of reality. Phenothiazines are sometimes used for relieving severe anxiety, especially in panic attacks caused by dependence on amphetamines or lycergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Phenothiazines are used for alleviating behavioral problems in children that do not respond to treatment of other agents. Phenothiazines are sometimes used during the preoperational period because they relieve anxiety, control nausea, hiccups, diarrhea, and also cause muscle relaxation. [Pg.85]

Most frequent - Anx ety, apnea asthenia bradycardia confusion constipation diarrhea dizziness headache hypertension hypotension lightheadedness nausea nervousness respiratory depression sedation skeletal muscle rigidity sweating vasodilation vomiting. Symptoms are more prominent in ambulatory patients and in those without severe pain. Use lower doses in these patients. Some reactions may be alleviated if the ambulatory patient lies down. [Pg.888]

Adults A 50 mg dose usually alleviates nausea. In severe cases, 150 mg/day may be taken. Usual maintenance dose is 50 mg, 2 times/day. In prevention of motion sickness, take 50 mg at least hour before beginning travel. For extended travel, a second 50 mg dose may be taken after 4 to 6 hours. [Pg.984]

Apart from disease entities, one recognizes a variety of symptoms that makes up a disease, like pain, fever, convulsions, cough, rhinitis, nausea, meteorism, diarrhea, headache, dyspnea, anorexia, insomnia, constipation, etc. All these symptoms could make up a symptom complex or syndrome, or may stand alone by themselves without being part of a disease entity. The term of symptomatic drug treatment usually refers to its use for the alleviation of symptoms, whether as a part of a syndrome or standing alone. [Pg.491]

Antidysrrbytbmic. Preventing arrhythmia. Anti-emetic. Prevents or alleviates nausea and vomiting. [Pg.562]

Headaches Arising from Contact with NG or Dynamites. Test exposure (oral and skin contact) to a 20% NG Dynamite produced severe headaches, nausea and vomiting. These effects are ascribed to intracranial vasodilation produced by the NG vapors or liquid. Headaches were alleviated by intramuscular injection of caffeine-Na-benzoate followed by oral administration of... [Pg.35]

Sometimes secondary effects can be used therapeutically. Antihistamines, for example, have as their primary effect the alleviation of an immune response. Secondarily, they cause drowsiness and reduce nausea associated with motion. Over-the-counter sleep aides and antinausea preparations contain antihistamines such as dimenhydrinate... [Pg.115]

Frequent symptoms of amphetamine withdrawal include excessive fatigue and depression. These may also occur nausea, vomiting, chills, cramps, headaches, and arrhythmia (a change in the rhythm of the heartbeat). A physician may prescribe antidepressants to help alleviate depression during amphetamine withdrawal. Also during withdrawal, if psychosis and/or hallucinations are experienced, treatment with chlorpromazine (Thorazine) or haloperidol (Haldol) may be necessary. Finally, ammonium chloride may be prescribed to more quickly remove amphetamines through the urine. [Pg.142]

Schedule II drugs include Marinol (dronabinol), a synthetic version of THC in pill form, which has a currently accepted medical use in the United States primarily to alleviate nausea and stimulate appetite in cancer patients. Although Marinol may be legally prescribed and has been available for several... [Pg.86]

There are some serious drawbacks to the use of cis-platin in anticancer therapy. Severe toxicity problems occur, such as failure of the kidneys and bone marrow (nephrotoxicity and hematoxicity), nausea, intractable vomiting (emesis), peripheral neuropathy, deafness (ototoxicity), and seizures. These toxic side effects of cisplatin limit the dose that can be administered to patients typical doses are 100 mg day for up to five consecutive days. The nephrotoxicity can be reduced by hydration and diuresis. 5-HT3-receptor blockers control nausea and emesis. Much effort has been devoted to the development of chemopro-tective agents, which alleviate the side effects on normal tissues without compromising antitumor activity - mainly sulfur-containing agents such as sodium dithiocarbamate (Naddtc), 2-mercaptoethanesulphonate (mesna), and amifos-tine (WR-2721). Amifostine has recently been approved for coadministration with cisplatin, which reduces nephro- and neurotoxicity. ... [Pg.3882]
