Iloprost nausea, diarrhea

In a randomized, controlled study of cyclic iloprost or nifedipine in 46 patients with systemic sclerosis, the predictable adverse effects of iloprost (headache, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea) were common but quickly resolved after the end of the infusion (5). They rarely required a temporary dose reduction. Hypotension occurred less often than with nifedipine. 

Synthetic PGI2 has been used in arterial occlusive disease as an anti-aggregatory drug (23-28). Adverse effects are common (85%). Headache, fever, nausea, anorexia, diarrhea, pain at the infusion site, and arthralgia are the most prominent. A single study has suggested an increased risk of thromboembolism after the use of iloprost in peripheral vascular disease (29). 

Comparative studies Studies of prostanoids in intermittent claudication have yielded inconsistent results. In a multicenter comparison of three doses of oral iloprost, pentoxifylline, and placebo, conducted in 1998-1999 but published only in 2008, oral iloprost did not improve exercise performance or quality of Ufe pi "]. Serious adverse events did not differ among the groups and neither did any specific cardiovascular events. However, oral iloprost was poorly tolerated and therapy was often interrupted because of headache, flushing, nausea, or diarrhea.
