Nausea fluconazole

Toxicological studies have demonstrated that there are no important problems with fluconazole. Therapeutic doses of fluconazole may cause enzyme induction in the Hver. This suggests that interactions with other dmgs cannot be excluded. The side effects are similar to those of itraconazole and include nausea, headache, and vertigo. Occasionally, increased Hver enzymes may be noted. Like itraconazole, fluconazole is contraindicated during pregnancy. 

Fluconazole is well tolerated. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and skin rash have been reported in fewer than 3% of patients. Asymptomatic liver enzyme elevation has been described, and several cases of drug-associated hepatic necrosis have been reported. Alopecia has been reported as a common adverse event in patients receiving prolonged high-dose therapy. Coadministration of fluconazole with phenytoin results in increased serum phenytoin levels. 

Adverse Effects. Hepatotoxicity is the most serious adverse effect of fluconazole this drug should be used cautiously in patients with impaired liver function. Other common side effects include headache and gastrointestinal disturbances (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting). 

Fluconazole is generally well tolerated. The most common adverse effects are nausea and vomiting. Abnormal liver function tests and slight increases in hepatic enzymes have been reported, and there have been anecdotal reports of hepatitis and hepatic failure. Early studies have shown no changes in testosterone concentrations or in the adrenal response to ACTH. Rashes and a few cases of exfoliative skin disorder have been reported (SED-12,681) and have been seen more frequently in patients with AIDS (29). Alopecia has been reported in a few cases with the use of high doses for prolonged periods of time (SEDA-18, 281). Rare instances of anaphylactoid reactions have been reported (SED-12, 681) (30). Rare instances of hypersensitivity reactions have occurred in other individuals (SEDA-16, 293) (SEDA-17,320). Tumor-inducing effects have not been reported. 

Nausea and vomiting are mentioned in most reports of patients taking fluconazole, with an incidence of 10-15% (SED-12, 682) (36,40,41,46,47). Anorexia, mild abdominal pain, and diarrhea have been reported, but none was severe. 

Based on an EMBASE and MEDLINE literature search, data from 90 studies in 4209 subjects were reviewed [13 ]. During the studies, 794 adverse effects were recorded. The most common adverse effect was fluconazole-related hepatotoxicity (47.6%), of which the majority occurred in neonates (295 out of 378 cases). Gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, anorexia and gastritis accounted for 15.4% of all adverse effects.
