Nausea etiology

Specific etiologies associated with nausea and vomiting are presented in Table 27-1. 

A variety of other common etiologies have been proposed for the development of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. These are presented in Table 27-3. 

Nonchemotherapy Etiologies of Nausea and Vomiting in Cancer Patients... 

Metoclopramide may have some potential value (10 mg orally or IV 30 minutes before each meal and at bedtime) in nausea and vomiting of a variety of etiologies (uncontrolled studies report 80% to 90% efficacy), including emesis during pregnancy and labor (5 to 10 mg orally or 5 to 20 mg IV or IM, 3 times a day). 

In the United States, ginger is promoted to relieve and prevent nausea caused by motion sickness, morning sickness, and other etiologies. Additionally, in Germany it is promoted for use against nervousness, coughing, urinary tract conditions, and sore throat (6). 

The overall goal of treatment should be to prevent or eliminate nausea and vomiting regardless of etiology. 

Nausea and vomiting are common complaints among many individuals with gastrointestinal (Gl) disorders. However, because of the variable etiologies of these problems, management may be quite simple or detailed and complex, essentially innocnons or associated with therapy-indnced adverse reactions. This chapter provides an overview of nansea and vomiting, two mnltifaceted problems. 

A variety of clinical conditions may be associated with vertigo and dizziness. The etiology of these complaints may include diseases that are infectious, postinfectious, demyelinative, vascular, neoplastic, degenerative, traumatic, toxic, psychogenic, or idiopathic. Therefore symptoms of imbalance or imbalance perceived by the patient present a particular clinical challenge. Whether associated with a minor or complex disorder, motion sickness may be associated with nausea and vomiting. 

The most common complications that occur during the hemodialysis procedure include hypotension, cramps, nausea and vomiting, headache, chest pain, hack pain, and fever or chiUs. Table 45-3 hsts these comphcations and the etiology with predisposing factors...
