This type of adhesive is generally useful in the temperature range where the material is either leathery or mbbery, ie, between the glass-transition temperature and the melt temperature. Hot-melt adhesives are based on thermoplastic polymers that may be compounded or uncompounded ethylene—vinyl acetate copolymers, paraffin waxes, polypropylene, phenoxy resins, styrene—butadiene copolymers, ethylene—ethyl acrylate copolymers, and low, and low density polypropylene are used in the compounded state polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes are used in the mosdy uncompounded state. [Pg.235]

NR, styrene-butadiene mbber (SBR), polybutadiene rubber, nitrile mbber, acrylic copolymer, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer, and A-B-A type block copolymer with conjugated dienes have been used to prepare pressure-sensitive adhesives by EB radiation [116-126]. [128] have studied the EB radiation-curable pressure-sensitive adhesives from dimer acid-based polyester urethane diacrylate with various methacrylate monomers. Acrylamide has been polymerized in the intercalation space of montmorillonite using an EB. The polymerization condition has been studied using a statistical method. The product shows a good water adsorption and retention capacity [129]. [Pg.866]

Superabsorbent polymers are now commonly made from the polymerization of acrylic acid blended with sodium hydroxide in the presence of an initiator to form a polyacrylic acid, sodium salt (sometimes referred to as cross-linked sodium polyacrylate). Some of the polymers include polyacrylamide copolymer, ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer, cross-linked carboxy-methyl-cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol copolymers, cross-linked polyethylene oxide, and starch grafted copolymer of polyacrylonitrile to name a few. The latter is one of the oldest SAP forms created. [Pg.32]

Chemical modification of polymers continues to be an active field of research [1-5]. It is a common means of changing and optimising the physical, mechanical and technological properties of polymers [5-7]. It is also a unique route to produce polymers with unusual chemical structure and composition that are otherwise inaccessible or very difficult to prepare by conventional polymerisation methods. For example, hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) which has a structure which resembles that of the copolymer ethylene and acrylonitrile, is very difficult to prepare by conventional copolymerisation of the monomers. Polyvinyl alcohol can only be prepared by hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. Most of the rubbers or rubbery materials have unsaturation in their main chain and/or in their pendent groups. So these materials are very susceptible towards chemical reactions compared to their saturated counterparts. [Pg.125]

Ethylene Copolymers. Ethylene copolymers probably are the most important materials in hot-melt formulations. Ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene-ethyl acrylate polymers are very versatile and available in a wide range of grades offering different co-monomer contents and viscosities. The melts are stable and compatible with various modifying resins, waxes, extenders, and fillers. Adhesion to many substrates is good—including the polyolefin plastics, which are difficult to bond with most other types of adhesive unless the surfaces are pre-treated. [Pg.98]
