Cellulose-acetate-butyrate resin properties

Nitrocellulose, polyester, acrylic and methacrylic ester copolymer, formaldehyde resin, rosin, cellulose acetate butyrate are the most frequently used polymers in nail polish formulations. Solvents were selected to suit the polymer used. These include acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl glycol acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, xylene, isopropyl alcohol, methyl chloroform, and naphtha. Solvents constitute a substantial Ifaction of the composition usually around 70%. Reformulation is ongoing to improve the flexibility and durability of the nail polish. Other efforts are directed to improve antifungal properties,to eliminate ketones and formaldehyde resin (ketones because of their toxicity and irritating smell and formaldehyde resins because they contribute to dermatitis), and elimination of yellowing. Cellulosics. Nitrocellulose lacquers are the most important of the cel-lulosics. They were introduced in the 1920s and used as fast-drying finishes for a number of manufactured products. Applied at low solids using expensive solvents, they will not meet air-quality standards. By modifying nitrocellulose with other resins such as alkyds and ureas, the VOC content can be lowered and performance properties can be increased. Ethyl Acetate n (1874) CH3COOC2H5. A colorless liquid made by heating acetic acid and ethyl alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid, then distilling. It is a powerful solvent for ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, acrylics, polystyrene, and coumarone-indene resins. It is also used in flexographic and rotogravure inks. Although it is highly flammable, it is the least toxic of common industrial solvents. Properties bp, 77°C sp gr, 0.—901/20°C flp. 0.56°C (31°F) refractive index, 1.373 vp, 77 mm Hg/20°C. Ethyl butyrate is a nontoxic liquid hoving an odor suggestive of pineapples. Its solvent properties lie between those of ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate, and when mixed with other solvents it will dissolve cellulose esters and ethers, and many of the natural and synthetic resins. Di(2-ethylhexyl) isophthalate (dioctyl iso-phthalate, DIOP) n. A primary plasticizer for PVC, most notable for low volatility and its resistance to marring by nitrocellulose lacquers, in addition to good general-purpose properties.
