Polyvinyl acetates

Vinyl acetate (VAc) copolymers are most often used as binders in interior and exterior architectural coatings. [Pg.25]

Because the solubility of vinyl acetate in water is quite significant, a large number of oligoradicals are formed during the nucleation stage, which subsequently micellise and aggregate to create polymer particles. Grafting reactions by chain transfer (357) in vinyl [Pg.25]

This rubbery, synthetic, polymer is used in the food industry, mainly as an adhesive in laminating operations. [Pg.18]

Prepared generally by ester interchange from polyvinylacelate (ethanoate) using methanol and base also formed by hydrolysis of the acetate by NaOH and water. The properties of the poly(vinyl alcohol) depend upon the structure of the original polyvinyl acetate. Forms copolymers. Used as a size in the textile industry, in aqueous adhesives, in the production of polyvinyl acetates (e.g. butynal) for safety glasses. U.S. production 1980... [Pg.323]

Four other groups of synthetic adhesives find uses in secondary processing, ie, overlaying, assembly gluing, etc, and in furniture and cabinet manufacture. Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA) adhesives are widely used in appHcation of veneers and other overlays to panel substrates and in some unit-assembly operations. PVA adhesives are an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate in water and cure by loss of water. The PVA adhesives are somewhat... [Pg.378]

Cellular organic plastics. Elastomer, polystyrene, polyisocyanate, polyisocyanurate, and polyvinyl acetate. [Pg.1098]

Bead Polymerization Bulk reaction proceeds in independent droplets of 10 to 1,000 [Lm diameter suspended in water or other medium and insulated from each other by some colloid. A typical suspending agent is polyvinyl alcohol dissolved in water. The polymerization can be done to high conversion. Temperature control is easy because of the moderating thermal effect of the water and its low viscosity. The suspensions sometimes are unstable and agitation may be critical. Only batch reaciors appear to be in industrial use polyvinyl acetate in methanol, copolymers of acrylates and methacrylates, polyacrylonitrile in aqueous ZnCh solution, and others. Bead polymerization of styrene takes 8 to 12 h. [Pg.2102]

Polyvinyl acetate [9003-20-7]. Ppted from acetone by addition of n-hexane. [Pg.337]

Today plasticisers are used in a variety of polymers such as polyvinyl acetate, acrylic polymers, cellulose acetate and, most important of all, poly(vinyl chloride). [Pg.131]

A number of different binder materials are in use for chopped strand mat and include starch, polyvinyl acetate and polyesters. The binder used depends on the end use of the laminate and the method of fabrication. [Pg.705]

Nitrile rubber adhesives. The main application corresponds to laminating adhesives. PVC, polyvinyl acetate and other polymeric films can be laminated to several metals, including aluminium and brass, by using NBR adhesives. NBR adhesives can also be used to join medium-to-high polarity rubbers to polyamide substrates. The adhesive properties of NBR rubbers can be further improved by chemical modification using polyisocyanate or by grafting with methyl methacrylate. [Pg.659]

Group of plastics composed of resins derived from vinyl monomers, excluding those that are covered by other classifications (i.e., acrylics and styrene plastics). Examples include PVC, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, and various... [Pg.141]

Synthetic resins form the heart of the paint industry. The tw o main types of synthetic resins are condensation polymers and addition polymers. Condensation polymers, formed by condensation of like or unlike molecules into a new, more complex compound, include polyesters, phenolics.. iniino resins, polyurethane, and epoxies. Addition polymers include polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, and the acrylates,... [Pg.285]

Heitz et al. (33) also described the preparation of polyvinyl acetate cross-linked with butanediol divinyl ether. The polymer is the base of the Merckogel series of size exclusion chromatography packings, and its hydrolyzed derivative, polyvinyl alcohol, is marketed as Fractogel and Toyopearls. [Pg.9]

A process for the preparation of porous polyvinyl alcohol gels in three steps is (1) suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate with diethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of a diluent as porogen, (2) saponifying of the resulting porous polyvinyl acetate gel with an alkali, and then (3) subjecting... [Pg.9]

Vinyl acetate is a reactive colorless liquid that polymerizes easily if not stahilized. It is an important monomer for the production of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, and vinyl acetate copolymers. The U.S. production of vinyl acetate, the 40th highest-volume chemical, was approximately 3 hillion pounds in 1994. [Pg.200]

Polyvinyl acetate (PVA), acrylic and other polymer dispersions have been widely used as anti-dust treatments for concrete floors for many years. In general, the polymer dispersions have been similar to those used in the manufacture of emulsion paints, and until recently have tended to be based on dispersions of relatively large polymer particles (particle size 0.15-0.25 x 10 m). Dispersions are now becoming available which offer superior performance as floor sealers. The chemical and water resistance of the various polymer dispersions which have been used in the past vary considerably from the PVA types, which are rapidly softened and eventually washed out by water, to acrylic and SBR types which exhibit excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals. Water-based sealers are gaining wider acceptance because of... [Pg.102]

A bond coat of a polymer latex (also called polymer emulsions or dispersions) such as styrene butadiene (SBR), polyvinyl acetate (PVA) acrylics or modified acrylics. These are applied to the prepared concrete as... [Pg.104]

PVC/PVA copolymer solutions Polyvinyl chloride/polyvinyl acetate copolymers can be readily dissolved in blends of aromatic hydrocarbon,... [Pg.750]

Polyvinyl acetate and derivatives Polyvinyl acetate is used largely for coating applications, but the derivative polyvinyl alcohol, will, providing there are some residual acetate groups, dissolve in water. Reaction products of polyvinyl alcohol with aldehydes such as polyvinyl formal and polyvinyl butyral are highly specialised materials. [Pg.932]

Polyvinyl chloride/Polyvinyl acetate Good prevent yellowing. High-molecular-weight organotin stabilizers improve radiation stability color-corrected radiation formulations are available. Less resistant than PVC. [Pg.405]

Organic solvents are most commonly used, and encapsulating polymers include ethylcellu-lose, NC, polvvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinyl acetate and others. Inter facial polymerization produces a polymer such as nylon at the interface between layered solns of two precursor materials such as (in the case of a nylon) a diamine and a diacid (Refs 3 11). If the particle or drop-... [Pg.142]
