Many synthetic latices exist (7,8) (see Elastomers, synthetic). They contain butadiene and styrene copolymers (elastomeric), styrene—butadiene copolymers (resinous), butadiene and acrylonitrile copolymers, butadiene with styrene and acrylonitrile, chloroprene copolymers, methacrylate and acrylate ester copolymers, vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl and vinyUdene chloride copolymers, ethylene copolymers, fluorinated copolymers, acrylamide copolymers, styrene—acrolein copolymers, and pyrrole and pyrrole copolymers. Many of these latices also have carboxylated versions. [Pg.23]

Surfactants used as lubricants are added to polymer resins to improve the flow characteristics of the plastic during processing they also stabilise the cells of polyurethane foams during the foaming process. Surfactants are either nonionic (e.g. fatty amides and alcohols), cationic, anionic (dominating class e.g. alkylbenzene sulfonates), zwitterionic, hetero-element or polymeric (e.g. EO-PO block copolymers). Fluorinated anionic surfactants or super surfactants enable a variety of surfaces normally regarded as difficult to wet. These include PE and PP any product required to wet the surface of these polymers will benefit from inclusion of fluorosurfactants. Surfactants are frequently multicomponent formulations, based on petro- or oleochemicals. [Pg.785]

Bunn and Peiser (3) first recognized macromolecular isomorphism in synthetic materials in the case of the ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers and in polyvinylalcohol itself. Successively, they suggested this possibility also for natural rubber. Subsequently, many other examples of macromolecular isomorphism were described. Stock-Schweyer et al. [112] reported a high-pressure effect on molecular motions in the paraelectric phase of a (70/30) VDF and TrFE copolymer. Fluorine-19 NMR relaxation times (Ti and Tjp) were studied over a range of pressures from 0.1 to 200 MPa. Correlation times of the molecular motions, as functions of pressure and temperature, were obtained and the activation parameters determined. The experimental data confirmed the presence of a slow motion in the amorphous phase in addition to the fast anisotropic motion. The results indicated that the relaxation times of the copolymer are controlled by the effects of both temperature and volume. The authors concluded that 40-50% of the mobility increase of segments with increasing temperature under constant pressure results from volume expansion. [Pg.698]
