This type of adhesive is generally useful in the temperature range where the material is either leathery or mbbery, ie, between the glass-transition temperature and the melt temperature. Hot-melt adhesives are based on thermoplastic polymers that may be compounded or uncompounded ethylene—vinyl acetate copolymers, paraffin waxes, polypropylene, phenoxy resins, styrene—butadiene copolymers, ethylene—ethyl acrylate copolymers, and low, and low density polypropylene are used in the compounded state polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes are used in the mosdy uncompounded state. [Pg.235]

Ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymers are very similar to the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. The former materials are considered to have higher abrasion resistance and heat resistance whilst the EVA have been considered to be tougher and of greater clarity. [Pg.277]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is utilized as a component of starch-based adhesives.11121114 Other patents report the use of partially oxidized starch,1115 dextrins,1116 dextrins and urea,1117 borax,1118 boric acid,1119 and vinyl methyl ether-maleic acid copolymers.1120 Other patents indicate the use of poly (vinyl alcohol) with partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate),1121 nonhy-drolyzed poly(vinyl acetate),1122 and poly(vinyl chloride).1123 A few patents have reported such poly acrylic additives as poly (acrylic acid)1124 and its salts,1125 poly(acrylamide),1126 1127 A-methylacrylamide or poly(A-acryl-amide),1128 and polyethyleneimine.1129 Polystyrene has also been used,1130 as well as more complex copolymers such as a maleic acid monobutyl ester-methyl vinyl ether copolymer, together with dextrin and polyacrylamide),1131 carboxylated ethyl acrylate-styrene zinc salt copolymer,1132 ethylene-methyl acrylate-vinyl acetate copolymer,1133 vinyl acetate-vinyl pyr-rolidone copolymer,1134 and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.1135 Some adhesives are compounded with SBR latex1136 1138 and phenol-formaldehyde resins.1139... [Pg.413]

Orientations in elongated mbbers are sometimes regular to the extent that there is local crystallization of individual chain segments (e.g., in natural rubber). X-ray diffraction patterns of such samples are very similar to those obtained from stretched fibers. The following synthetic polymers are of technical relevance as mbbers poly(acrylic ester)s, polybutadienes, polyisoprenes, polychloroprenes, butadiene/styrene copolymers, styrene/butadiene/styrene tri-block-copolymers (also hydrogenated), butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymers (also hydrogenated), ethylene/propylene co- and terpolymers (with non-conjugated dienes (e.g., ethylidene norbomene)), ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, ethyl-ene/methacrylic acid copolymers (ionomers), polyisobutylene (and copolymers with isoprene), chlorinated polyethylenes, chlorosulfonated polyethylenes, polyurethanes, silicones, poly(fluoro alkylene)s, poly(alkylene sulfide)s. [Pg.22]

To improve dyeability, flexibility, and toughness of isotactic polypropylene, PP, it was compounded in a Banbury-type mixer with ethylene-vinyl acetate, 7 wt% EVAc. Several other ethylene copolymers were also used. In Miliprint patent, EVAc or ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer, 18-32 wt% EVAc or EEA, was found to improve impact strength, elongation, and low brittleness temperature of PP. hi Firestone patent, linear polybutadiene, BR, was used. The Mitsubishi patent disclosed improvements of PP impact strength properties by blending it with 0.5-25 wt% ethylene-aliphatic esters, e.g., EVAc... [Pg.1669]

In 2003 Dow introduced three classes of compatibiliser, i.e., maleated polyolefins, ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymers, all imder the Amplify name. They were intended to improve the impact and viscosity characteristics of engineering thermoplastics and polyolefins for use in domestic appliance and automotive components, as well as for coatings and adhesives. [Pg.103]
