When ethylene is copolymerized with substantial amounts (>25%) of propylene an elastomeric copolymer is produced, commonly known as ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) or ethylene-propylene monomer (EPM) rubber. When a diene, such as dicyclopentadiene, is also included, a terpolymer known as ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber is obtained. EPR and EPDM are produced with single site and Ziegler-Natta catalysts and are important in the automotive and construction industries. However, EPR and EPDM are produced in much smaller quantities relative to polyethylene. Elastomers display vastly different properties than other versions of industrial polyethylene and are considered outside the purview of this text. EPR and EPDM will not be discussed further. [Pg.6]

The models considered earlier were developed for homopolymerization of olefins with single- and multiple-site catalysts. As has aheady been seen, several industrial polyolefins are, however, copolymers of ethylene, propylene and higher a-olefins. Because, for copolymerization, the kinetic rate constants depend on monomer and chain end type (in the terminal model), modeling these systems may seem daunting at first sight, but it will now be shown that, using the concept of pseudo-kinetic constants, the same equations derived for homopolymerization can be applied for copolymerization as well. [Pg.75]

Polyolefins, PO. First impact modification of PO, by addition of elastomers, was patented independently by Bayer A.-G. and Standard Oil Co. in 1937. The isotactic polypropylene, PP, was commercialized in 1957, and its first blends (with polyisobutylene, PIB, and polyethylene, PE) were patented in 1958. In 1960, du Pont started manufacturing ethylene-propylene, EPR, and three years later ethylene-propylene-diene, EPDM, copolymers [Gresham and Hunt, I960]. The first patent on impact modification of PP by addition of EPR dates from 1960. Direct reactor blending of PE/PP/EPR resulting in a thermoplastic polyolefin, R-TPO, dates from 1979.
