Addressing

The electronics of an LCD convert the information to be displayed into a series of applied voltages of a given sign, amplitude and pulse width in order to activate the desired pixels at the appropriate time. This results in the modulation of the light intensity at the addressed pixels, thus creating the image or information to be displayed. The main methods by which this can be achieved are described below. [Pg.30]

In an LCD with multiplex addressing, parallel rows and columns of elec- [Pg.30]

Therefore, the more lines there are to be addressed, the smaller the difference between the select and non-select voltages becomes, Le. there is only a difference of about 11 % between Vs and Vns for 64 addressable lines. An undesirable consequence of this small voltage difference is the inadvertent activation of adjacent pixels (cross-talk), which reduces the contrast. In order to address a [Pg.31]

For batch reactors, account has to be taken of the time required to achieve a given conversion. Batch cycle time is addressed later. [Pg.26]

Having found the best nonintegrated sequence, most designers would then heat integrate. In other words, the total problem is not solved simultaneously but in two steps. Moving outward from the center of the onion (see Fig. 1.6), the separation layer is addressed first, followed by the heat exchanger network layer. [Pg.142]

Details of how this design was developed in Fig. 6.9 are included in Chap. 16. For now, simply take note that the targets set by the composite curves are achievable in design, providing that the pinch is recognized, there is no transfer of heat ac ss it, and no inappropriate use of utilities occurs. However, insight into the pinch is needed to analyze some of the important decisions still to be made before network design is addressed. [Pg.169]

After maximizing heat recovery in the heat exchanger network, those heating duties and cooling duties not serviced by heat recovery must be provided by external utilities. The outer-most layer of the onion model is now being addressed, but still dealing with targets. [Pg.184]

The tick-off heuristic. Once the matches around the pinch have been chosen to satisfy the criteria for minimum energy, the design should be continued in such a manner as to keep capital costs to a minimum. One important criterion in the capital cost is the number of units (there are others, of course, which shall be addressed later). Keeping the number of units to a minimum can be achieved using the tick-off heuristic. To tick off a stream, individual units are made as... [Pg.367]

The considerations addressed so far in network design have been restricted to those of energy performance and number of units. In addition, the problems have all been straightforward to design for... [Pg.385]

Mass spectrometry allows analysis by hydrocarbon family for a variety of petroleum cuts as deep as vacuum distillates since we have seen that the molecules must be vaporized. The study of vacuum residues can be conducted by a method of direct introduction which we will address only briefly because the quantitative aspects are ek r metiy difficult to master. Table 3.6 gives some examples the matrices used differ according to the distillation cut and the chemical content such as the presence or absence of olefins or sulfur. [Pg.50]

The most important point in the use of diesel fuel is its cold temperature behavior. The subject has been addressed previously because it directly affects the engine operation in winter conditions. [Pg.246]

Owing to the large number of types of industrial lubricants, the number of constraints, and therefore the number of desired properties, is very large. The main industrial oils are summarized in Tables 6.4 and 6.5, the first giving the constraints common to all applications, and the second addressing the more specific requirements. A few essential properties appear from these tables ... [Pg.282]

The safety triangle shows that there are many orders of magnitude more unsafe acts than LTIs and fatalities. A combination of unsafe acts often results in a fatality. Addressing safety in industry should begin with the base of the triangle trying to eliminate the unsafe acts. This is simple to do, in theory, since most of the unsafe acts arise from carelessness or failure to follow procedures. In practice, reducing the number of unsafe acts requires personal commitment and safety awareness. [Pg.68]

The UK government enquiry into the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988 has had a significant impact on working practices and equipment and has helped to improve offshore safety around the world. One result has been the development of a Safety Management System (SMS) which is a method of integrating work practices, and is a form of quality management system. Major oil companies have each developed their own specific SMS, to suit local environments and modes of operation, but the SMS typically addresses the following areas (recommended by the Cullen Enquiry into the Piper Alpha disaster) ... [Pg.68]

In the first step, a screening process will be applied to separate the major potential hazards these will be addressed in more detail. QRA techniques are used to evaluate the extent of the risk arising from hazards with the potential to cause major accidents, based on the prediction of the likelihood and magnitude of the event. This assessment will be based on engineering judgement and statistics of previous performance. Where necessary, risk reduction measures will be applied until the level of risk is acceptable. This of course is an emotive subject, since it implies placing a value on human life. [Pg.69]

Analytical models using classical reservoir engineering techniques such as material balance, aquifer modelling and displacement calculations can be used in combination with field and laboratory data to estimate recovery factors for specific situations. These methods are most applicable when there is limited data, time and resources, and would be sufficient for most exploration and early appraisal decisions. However, when the development planning stage is reached, it is becoming common practice to build a reservoir simulation model, which allows more sensitivities to be considered in a shorter time frame. The typical sorts of questions addressed by reservoir simulations are listed in Section 8.5. [Pg.207]

The operations group will develop general operating and maintenance objectives for the facilities which will address product quality, costs, safety and environmental issues. At a more detailed level, the mode of operations and maintenance tor a particular project will be specified in the field development plan. Both specifications will be discussed in this section, which will focus on the input of the production operations and maintenance departments to a field development plan. The management of the field during the producing period is discussed in Section 14.0. [Pg.278]

Utilities systems support production operations, and should also be addressed when putting together a field development plan. Some examples of these are ... [Pg.284]

Telecommunications systems will include internal communications within the platforms (telephone, radio, walkie-talkie, air-ground-air, navigation, public address) and external systems (telephone, telex, fax, telemetry, VFIF radio, and possibly satellite links). These systems are designed to handle the day-to-day communications as well as emergency situations. [Pg.285]

The uncertainty may be addressed by constructing a base case which represents the most probable outcome, and then performing sensitivities around this case to determine which of the inputs the project is most vulnerable to. The most influential parameters may then be studied more carefully. Typical sensitivities are considered in Section 13.7, Sensitivity Analysis . [Pg.307]

In order to test the economic performance of the project to variations in the base case estimates for the input data, sensitivity analysis is performed. This shows how robust the project is to variations in one or more parameters, and also highlights which of the inputs the project economics is more sensitive to. These inputs can then be addressed more specifically. For example if the project economics is highly sensitive to a delay in first production, then the scheduling should be more critically reviewed. [Pg.325]

As a field matures, bottlenecks may appear in other areas, such as water treatment or gas compression processes, and become factors limiting oil or gas production. These issues can often be addressed both by surface and subsurface options, though the underlying justification remains the same the NPV of a debottlenecking exercise (net cost of action versus the increase in net revenue) must be positive. [Pg.359]

The character of a satellite development has considerable implications for a mature field in decline, but will not always have a positive economic effect on the life of the host. The remainder of this section will address the advantages of incremental development from the perspective of managing decline. [Pg.363]

There are different possibilities to address the above set of equations which can be solved provided 2in > 3i, and provided the measured ToF information varies between measurement points. For the purpose of the present work we have taken two simplifying assumptions (a) one virtual source predominates at each measurement point, m and (b) each virtual source predominates at more than one measurement point. Note that assumption (b) ensures the condition 2m > 3i that is necessary to obtain solutions for Equations (2) and (3). These assumptions are justified by considering the defect surface as an acoustic secondary field source. At each measurement point the transducer predominantly receives signals from an... [Pg.165]

Finally, by volumetric imaging Three-dimensional information was obtained by stacking reflection tomograms from multiple planes. Using this stacking technique, cubic voxels were obtained and could be numerically dissected in any plane. Although there are several attractive features related to this technique, there are also several questions which need to be addressed before it can be used for industrial applications. For example, the applied sound field must be further characterized. [Pg.206]

You will need to know addresses (http //www.) of the major Internet search engines. But search engines are still not perfected and the results may contain certain amount of noise, i. e, irrelevant information. Some companies use tricky things to get your attention we found many NDT related words like TOFD hidden as meta keywords in every page of some websites. If a search engine leads you to this site you will find no actual information provided, not even a single visible instance of the word TOFD. [Pg.976]

Usually an Internet user learns after a while where to go for specific information The Browser provides a bookmark tlmction where all these addresses can be organized by different subjects Typical bookmark folders are Societies, Companies, Journals, Institutes, Databases, Search engines The NDTnet Journal provides a virtual library that makes it easy for newcomers to find NDT sites. Unfortunately, some sites provide a lot of information but do not offer a search function. [Pg.977]

Some may say "We have invested in our own Internet presence (Home Page), so why we should advertise on the Internet Simply informing your established customers of your new Internet address is not sufficient. We ve already discussed some of the challenges users may face in searching for information. Your potential customer may lack the patience to follow hundreds of links of search engine output. [Pg.978]

We can not offer a long list of addresses here. You can find the most comprehensive source of Internet links at NDTnet s NDT/UT Library which list 250 sites with its abstracts in sections Institutes, Societies, Applications, Databases/Archives, Standards. [Pg.978]

The solid-gas interface and the important topics of physical adsorption, chemisorption, and catalysis are addressed in Chapters XVI-XVIII. These subjects marry fundamental molecular studies with problems of great practical importance. Again the emphasis is on the basic aspects of the problems and those areas where modeling complements experiment. [Pg.3]

Surface Micelles. The possibility of forming clusters of molecules or micelles in monolayer films was first proposed by Langmuir [59]. The matter of surface micelles and the issue of equilibration has been the subject of considerable discussion [191,201,205-209]. Nevertheless, many ir-a isotherms exhibit nonhorizontal lines unexplained by equations of state or phase models. To address this, Israelachvili [210] developed a model for ir-u curves where the amphiphiles form surface micelles of N chains. The isotherm... [Pg.134]
