Local environments

The UK government enquiry into the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988 has had a significant impact on working practices and equipment and has helped to improve offshore safety around the world. One result has been the development of a Safety Management System (SMS) which is a method of integrating work practices, and is a form of quality management system. Major oil companies have each developed their own specific SMS, to suit local environments and modes of operation, but the SMS typically addresses the following areas (recommended by the Cullen Enquiry into the Piper Alpha disaster) ... 

The attachment of pyrene or another fluorescent marker to a phospholipid or its addition to an insoluble monolayer facilitates their study via fluorescence spectroscopy [163]. Pyrene is often chosen due to its high quantum yield and spectroscopic sensitivity to the polarity of the local environment. In addition, one of several amphiphilic quenching molecules allows measurement of the pyrene lateral diffusion in the mono-layer via the change in the fluorescence decay due to the bimolecular quenching reaction [164,165]. 

Line shifts as a function of pressure have been studied for pentacene and terrylene in /i-teriDhenyl [98, 99]. Botli exhibited linear and reversible spectral red shifts witli increasing pressure. Modest variations (factors of 1.3-1.6) in tlie pressure shifts among molecules were attributed to slightly different local environments.

Single molecules also have promise as probes for local stmcture when doped into materials tliat are tliemselves nonfluorescent. Rlrodamine dyes in botli silicate and polymer tliin films exliibit a distribution of fluorescence maxima indicative of considerable heterogeneity in local environments, particularly for the silicate material [159]. A bimodal distribution of fluorescence intensities observed for single molecules of crystal violet in a PMMA film has been suggested to result from high and low viscosity local sites witliin tire polymer tliat give rise to slow and fast internal conversion, respectively [160]. 

From an electrochemical viewpoint, stable pit growtli is maintained as long as tire local environment witliin tire pit keeps tire pit under active conditions. Thus, tire effective potential at tire pit base must be less anodic tlian tire passivation potential (U ) of tire metal in tire pit electrolyte. This may require tire presence of voltage-drop (IR-drop) elements. In tliis respect the most important factor appears to be tire fonnation of a salt film at tire pit base. (The salt film fonns because tire solubility limit of e.g. FeCl2 is exceeded in tire vicinity of tire dissolving surface in tlie highly Cl -concentrated electrolyte.)... 

The present paper is devoted to the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of the NDCPA. The dynamical CPA is a one-site approximation in which variation of a site local environment (due to the presence, for example, of phonons with dispersion) is ignored. It is known from the coherent potential theory for disordered solids [21], that one can account in some extension the variation of a site local environment through an introduction of a nonlocal cohcn-cnt potential which depends on the difference between site... 

In order to obtain more insight into the local environment for the catalysed reaction, we investigated the influence of substituents on the rate of this process in micellar solution and compared this influence to the correspondirg effect in different aqueous and organic solvents. Plots of the logarithms of the rate constants versus the Hammett -value show good linear dependences for all... 

An alternative use of added readily degradable substrates is to drive the local environment toward anaerobiosis so that reactions such as reductive dechlorinations or reductive removal of nitro-groups are promoted. 

The minienvironment approach to contamination control has been increasing in use. A minienvironment is a localized environment created by an enclosure that isolates the product wafer from contamination and people (48). Another approach is using integrated processing, where consecutive processes are linked in a controlled environment (32). Both requite in situ sensors (qv) to measure internal chamber temperatures, background contamination, gas flow rates, pressure changes, and particularly wafer temperature (4). 

Nitric Oxide. Nitric oxide [10102-43-9] NO, is a ubiquitous intracellular and intercellular messenger serving a variety of functions including vasodilation, cytotoxicity, neurotransmission, and neuromodulation (9). NO is a paramagnetic diatomic molecule that readily diffuses through aqueous and hpid compartments. Its locus of action is dictated by its chemical reactivity and the local environment. NO represents the first identified member of a series of gaseous second messengers that also includes CO. 

The formation of anodic and cathodic sites, necessary to produce corrosion, can occur for any of a number of reasons impurities in the metal, localized stresses, metal grain size or composition differences, discontinuities on the surface, and differences in the local environment (eg, temperature, oxygen, or salt concentration). When these local differences are not large and the anodic and cathodic sites can shift from place to place on the metal surface, corrosion is uniform. With uniform corrosion, fouling is usually a more serious problem than equipment failure. 

The nature of the conditions of intensive production, however, can increase the risk of diseases and infections which can spread very rapidly and devastate large numbers of animals." Thus it is common practice for producers of poultry to add coccidiostats to their diets and vaccines to their drinking water in order to prevent coccidiosis and other infectious diseases such as bronchitis and Newcastle disease. A similar problem exists for intensively reared fish, where it is necessary to add antibiotics to their diets. A problem with intensively reared fish is that their diet is added directly into the water in which they live thus drugs and other additives in the diet are relatively easily dispersed into the local environment of fish farms, where they can increase bacterial resistance and also cause problems such as algal blooms. 

Solid state NMR is a relatively recent spectroscopic technique that can be used to uniquely identify and quantitate crystalline phases in bulk materials and at surfaces and interfaces. While NMR resembles X-ray diffraction in this capacity, it has the additional advantage of being element-selective and inherently quantitative. Since the signal observed is a direct reflection of the local environment of the element under smdy, NMR can also provide structural insights on a molecularlevel. Thus, information about coordination numbers, local symmetry, and internuclear bond distances is readily available. This feature is particularly usefrd in the structural analysis of highly disordered, amorphous, and compositionally complex systems, where diffraction techniques and other spectroscopies (IR, Raman, EXAFS) often fail. 

It is important to appreciate the assumption implicit in the concept of roughness factor chemical nature and local environment of surface molecules on the rough surface and on smooth surface are the same. 

Local response The response of an occupant or control device to changes in the local environment. 

Porous samples would appear on the surface to provide such a complex and uncontrolled local environment for deformation of solids that they would be of little interest in scientific investigations. Indeed, the principal interest in their responses is technologically driven they are very effective attenuators of wave profiles and much of materials synthesis and processing is carried out on powders.
