For each software package, we give a brief description, the address and telephone number of the supplier, and other pertinent information, (e.g., other programs offered by the vendor). The descriptions are concise overviews, not reviews, and an effort has been made to free the descriptions of commercial embellishments. When possible, we give an electronic mail address and/or an 800 number for toll-free telephone calls from within the United States, to make it easier to communicate with the supplier.

We realize that not all readers will be familiar with the Web or have access to it. Therefore, we start with introductory information as well as provide some electronic mail addresses and other helpful information that are not dependent on the Web. We also give information on several free monthly magazines, which exist almost entirely as a forum to advertise scientific software. Thus, there are multiple sources of information for students beginning research and/or for scientists trying to keep abreast of available software. Use of electronic mail (e-mail) has been widespread for more than a decade. E-mail simplifies the flow of ideas, connects people from distant offices, eliminates the need for meetings, and often boosts productivity. However, e-mail should be carefully managed to avoid unclear and inappropriate communication. E-mail messages should be concise and limited to one topic. When complex issues need to be addressed, phone calls are still best. 

A pen register is a mechanical device that records the numbers dialed on a telephone by monitoring the electrical impulses caused when the dial on the telephone is released. It does not overhear oral communications and does not indicate whether calls are actually completed. They can be used to record the telephone number dialed by the subject of the surveillance. Trap and trace devices, are used to record the telephone numbers of incoming calls received by the subject [114]. They are also used to capture source and address information for computer conversations (electronic mail) [115]. 

To use an electronic resume, you must have access to the Web as well as your own e-mail account. If you don t own your own computer, you can find connected computers at a public library, a college/university, an Internet cafe, or by visiting a friend or relative who owns a computer. It is not advisable to use the Web access or e-mail address at your current place of employment for your job search.
