The ISO 8681 standard, which treats all the petroleum products, groups lubricants, industrial oils and related products in the L Class. The international standard ISO 6743/0, accepted as the French standard NF T 60-162, subdivides the L Class into 18 families or categories.

Owing to the large number of types of industrial lubricants, the number of constraints, and therefore the number of desired properties, is very large. The main industrial oils are summarized in Tables 6.4 and 6.5, the first giving the constraints common to all applications, and the second addressing the more specific requirements. Domestic fuel oils are those used primarily in the home and include kerosene, stove oil, and furnace fuel oil. Diesel fuel oils are also distillate fuel oils, but residual oils have been successhjlly used to power marine diesel engines, and mixtures of distillates and residuals have been used on locomotive diesels. Heavy fuel oils include a variety of oils, ranging from distillates to residual oils, that must be heated to 260°C or higher before they can be used. In general, heavy fuel oil consists of residual oil blended with distillate to suit specific needs. Heavy fuel oil includes various industrial oils and, when used to fuel ships, is called bunker oil.

Where they are available, good-quality industrial oils having similar properties are preferred to the automotive oils. The recommendation of automotive oils for use at ambient temperature below —10°C is intended only as a guide pending widespread development of satisfactory low-temperature industrial oils. It is advisable to consult the gear manufacturer.

In addition to their use as stand-alone systems, LPs are often included within larger systems intended for decision support. In this role, the LP solver is usually hidden from the user, who sees only a set of critical problem input parameters and a set of suitably formatted solution reports. Many such systems are available for supply chain management—for example, planning raw material acquisitions and deliveries, production and inventories, and product distribution. In fact, the process industries—oil, chemicals, pharmaceuticals—have been among the earliest users. Almost every refinery in the developed world plans production using linear programming.

Since the beginning of industrial oil production, around 1880, almost 1100 Gb of crude oil have been extracted, of which more than two thirds were extracted in the last 20 years (Fig. 3.7). Annual production has been steadily increasing ever since, notably interrupted only by the first and second oil crises (1973-74 and 1979) and the Asian economic crisis in 1998. 

Major market opportunities and potential applications for renewable raw materials (RRM) fall into four main areas chemicals, speciality chemicals, industrial fibers and industrial oils [7].
