In a small display it is feasible to individually connect each display element, or pixel, to an external driving circuit. As the number of display elements increases, however, the number of connections quickly becomes prohibitive. For example, a display with a resolution typical for a television set (300 X 300 pixels) would require 90,000 external connections. Matrix addressing reduces this number to 600 connections, a much more feasible number.

Part of the testimony or statements regarding the Holocaust came in the form of written declarations or, more recently, as radio and television programs. In both cases it is easy to assess these statements in terms of the points listed under 2, but there is usually no opportunity to speak with the witness personally in order to leam more details and to establish his credibility and the plausibility of his testimony, for example by means of cross-examination. Critiques of the statements published in the various media are both numerous and extensive,17 and a more comprehensive work was presented recently.18 However, these witnesses usually evade the requests of critical contemporaries to make themselves available to cross-examination.19 And while radio and television regularly present new witnesses, they never ask them any critical questions, and deny interested researchers and lawyers access to these witnesses by keeping their address or even their entire identity secret. Just look at the preponderance of Web site addresses on radio and television commercials today. The Web has become a hot button that advertising companies love to exploit. During emerging crises, feedback can be obtained by reading copies of local newspapers, and monitoring radio and television broadcasts. In addition, EP coordinators can work with the LEPC to obtain feedback from citizens via rumor control centers with a telephone number or a web site address that has been publicized in advance. 

This revelation prompted me to look further into the popular writings on this issue. I became alarmed at the antitechnology slant of much of the media coverage concerning food safety. As a result, I wrote an essay that was published in Newsweek. The comments I received convinced me that a book was needed to reinforce to the public that our food is healthier and safer than ever before in history. This article and the television program that prompted it occurred in early 1994. The headlines quoted above appeared in 1995 and some in 2000 Obviously the problem of misinformation is still present, and there is no indication that it will abate. Two books published in 2001, It Ain t Necessarily So by David Murray, Joel Schwartz and S. Robert Lichter as well as Damned Lies and Statistics by Joel Best, continue to illustrate that many of the problems presented in this book are relevant and must be addressed as we encounter new challenges. 

In the last chapter, we presented a synopsis of the technological advances made in CRT s, particularly those for the color TV tube up to about the mld-1960 s. Since that time, a number of innovations have been accomplished. This change has been in response to market demand for a less bulky display device as well as a larger display size, i.e.- the "flat" television tube. We have already addressed CRT s for television, including color, black white and color projection systems. Color display CRTs are used primarily as computer monitors. Here, the same rare earth phosphors are used as for color TV. Monochrome displays refers to CRT monitors where only one color screen is used for special purposes, as described in the last chapter. Title IV also covers transportation offered by private entities and addresses telecommunications. Title rV requires that telephone companies provide telecommunication relay services, and that public service television announcements that are produced or funded with federal money include closed captions. Title V includes the miscellaneous provisions. This title notes that the ADA does not limit or invalidate other federal and state laws providing equal or greater protection for the rights of individuals with disabilities, and addresses related insurance, alternate dispute, and congressional coverage issues.
