Could a catalyst be designed so that the emission of the greenhouse gas, C02, from the vehicle exhaust systems be eliminated by converting it to a less harmful product ... 

Despite the advances mentioned above there are still clearly a number of major problems that need to be addressed and that will require significant research. Four major problems that we can cite are the following ... 

Emissions of hazardous gases and their environmental impact are another major problem that needs to be addressed. Since production of goods keeps constantly increasing worldwide, the greenhouse gas emissions from all the major fuels are also on the increase (Chryssolouris et al. 2008). 

Surface spectroscopy is the most common tool used to characterize and analyze surfaces. Assuming that a technique of sufficient sensitivity can be found, another major problem that needs to be addressed in surface spectroscopy is distinguishing between signals from the surface and the bulk of the sample. It is important that the spectroscopic technique chosen be surface specific. The technique must be able to distinguish between signals from the bulk and the surface phase. To illustrate this, we shall look at one way in which surface specificity can be achieved that makes use of the special properties of low energy electrons. It is an approach employed in common surface spectroscopic techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). 

Although supercritical alcohol reactions seem promising, as they solve most of the existing problems, there has been a lot of debate on the efficiency of the reaction in terms of energy utilization and also safety issue due to the high pressure and temperature employed in this technique (Rajan and Senthilkumar, 2009 Sinhaetal., 2008).
