AWARE

Clearly, some of these measures to reduce waste in process operations—such as design for low process inventory—can be taken into consideration at the early stages of design, but many cannot. We should be aware of the problem and do whatever we can in the early stages to prevent problems later. [Pg.296]

Working down this list, we see more innovative approaches. The unmanned option using computer assisted operation (discussed in Section 11.2) would improve safety of personnel and reduce operating cost. This is an example of innovation and the use of technology by the engineer, and is driven by an awareness of safety. [Pg.67]

The safety triangle shows that there are many orders of magnitude more unsafe acts than LTIs and fatalities. A combination of unsafe acts often results in a fatality. Addressing safety in industry should begin with the base of the triangle trying to eliminate the unsafe acts. This is simple to do, in theory, since most of the unsafe acts arise from carelessness or failure to follow procedures. In practice, reducing the number of unsafe acts requires personal commitment and safety awareness. [Pg.68]

The environmental performance of companies within the industry is normally subject to the legislative requirements of the host government, but is increasingly becoming scrutinised by the public, as available information and general levels of awareness increase. Major companies see responsible management of the environmental aspects of their operations as crucial to the future of their business. The approval of loans from major banks for project finance is usually conditional on acceptable environmental management. [Pg.70]

Since we did not know that we were in NDT we were unaware of others in the field and felt it to be a rather new field, we felt like explorers For us it was new and we carried on for some time blissfully unaware that Prof. Hughes had demonstrated the effect almost 100 years before and Foerster had solved most of the practical problems more than a decade earlier. We only gradually became aware that we were not alone. [Pg.273]

In adopting that New Approach, the European Council was aware that this decision had to be accompanied by a policy on assessment of conformity. The Global Approach to conformity assessment provides for procedures to prove compliance of a product with the essential requirements in New Approach directives. [Pg.938]

The scope of the directive covers the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0,5 bar. A pressure equipment in the sense of the directive is any vessel, piping, safety accessory or pressure accessory. An assembly means several pieces of pressure equipment assembled by a manufacturer to constitute an integrated and functional whole. It is important to be aware that the directive relates exclusively to the pressure risk and that therefore other directives, such as for machinery, low voltage may be applicable to the equipment concerned. [Pg.941]

While professional awareness has increased, there are still hindrances to universal access in the workplace. Today almost all companies have access to the Internet, but company policy may limit usage during business hours or on company equipment Also, many countries still face prohibitive online access charges, although free market competition will take care of that in time, and Canada s no-charge policy may well be the wave of the future ... [Pg.974]

We are aware of tire dangers inherent in predicting tire future. It is much safer to summarize tlie present and to extrapolate to tlie near tenn only. [Pg.2896]

Designations used by companies to distinguish their products are often claimed as trademarks. In all instances where John Wiley Sons, Tnc, is aware of a claim, the product names appear in initial capital or allcapttal letters, Readers, however, should contact the appropriate companies for more complete information regarding trademarks and registration. [Pg.763]

Remark. The authors are well aware of the commonly shared belief within the physics MD community that the apparent chaos does not destroy all long term information, but only irrelevant information in particular, average quantities are supposed to be not sensitive to numerical perturbations. We do not aim at deciding about this fundamental question here. [Pg.101]

For highly oscillatory Hamiltonian systems, the best energy conserving midpoint variant that we are aware of is (6). In the sequel we therefore examine only its performance. [Pg.286]

The 3D structure of a raolectile can be derived either from experiment or by computational methods. Regardless of the origin of the 3D model of the molecule under consideration, the user should alway.s be aware of how the data were obtain-... [Pg.94]

If users are inexperienced in searching for information, they should first consult search engines, meta-databases or portals (Table 5-6). Searchers who are familiar with databases may consult known databases (numeric databases, bibliographic databases, etc.) directly, being aware that they might miss new data sources (see Section 5.18). The reliability and quality of data are only given in peer-reviewed data sources. [Pg.271]

N is the number of point charges within the molecule and Sq is the dielectric permittivity of the vacuum. This form is used especially in force fields like AMBER and CHARMM for proteins. As already mentioned, Coulombic 1,4-non-bonded interactions interfere with 1,4-torsional potentials and are therefore scaled (e.g., by 1 1.2 in AMBER). Please be aware that Coulombic interactions, unlike the bonded contributions to the PEF presented above, are not limited to a single molecule. If the system under consideration contains more than one molecule (like a peptide in a box of water), non-bonded interactions have to be calculated between the molecules, too. This principle also holds for the non-bonded van der Waals interactions, which are discussed in Section 7.2.3.6. [Pg.345]

It is common practice to omit the second summation on the right hand side of (11.118) on the groiands that it is small compared with the contribution of the conductive flux, which appears on the left hand side. However, this may not be so If the reactions are rapid and the thermal conductivity of the pellet material is low. One should, therefore, at least be aware of the approximation involved in the fona of the enthalpy balance most commonly seen in the literature. [Pg.158]

The student will doubtless be aware of the fact that methyl, ethyl, n-propyl and iso propyl alcohols are completely miscible with water. The solubilities of the higher aloohols decrease progressively as the carbon content increases. The solubilities of all types of alcohols with five carbon atoms or more are quite small. For the isomeric butyl alcohols the solubilities (g. per 100 g. of water at 20°) are n-butyl, 8 iso-butyl, 23 scc.-butyl, 13 ierl.-butyl, completely miscible. [Pg.260]

Another way in which academic chemists keep in touch with industry is through consulting. During the years I consulted at different times for Exxon, Chevron, Cyanamid, ENICHEM (Italy), and Pechiney-Kuhlman (Erance, when a friend, Lucien Sobel, was a research director). I enjoyed these contacts, because they kept me aware of current industrial developments and interests. At the same time, it was also rewarding to be able to suggest to my industrial friends new approaches and directions that on occasion were useful and resulted in practical applications. [Pg.252]

There are undoubtedly many other good approaches as far as 1 am aware, this moleeule has not been made by this route. [Pg.104]

It is possible to use computational techniques to gain insight into the vibrational motion of molecules. There are a number of computational methods available that have varying degrees of accuracy. These methods can be powerful tools if the user is aware of their strengths and weaknesses. The user is advised to use ah initio or DFT calculations with an appropriate scale factor if at all possible. Anharmonic corrections should be considered only if very-high-accuracy results are necessary. Semiempirical and molecular mechanics methods should be tried cautiously when the molecular system prevents using the other methods mentioned. [Pg.96]

The energies from one iteration to the next may oscillate between two values, four values, or any other power of 2. (The author is not aware of any examples other than powers of 2.)... [Pg.193]
