Environmental awareness groups

Pressure groups in the environmentally aware political parties can make excessive demands. Often good public relations meetings can meet these, but the more reputable cooling tower suppliers can be invaluable in dealing with such matters. 

Environmental awareness and protection have led to the development of more environmentally benign surfactants. There is a trend of substituting petrochemicals by renewable raw materials. For this reason there is currently much interest in fatty acid-based surfactants. For both fatty alcohol ethoxylates and fatty amide ethoxylates the raw material for the hydrophobic group are triglyceride oils. The triglycerides are present in plants such as rapeseed, coconuts, soya, canola, sunflour, and tallow. Fatty acids, as used for the production of fatty amide ethoxylates, are obtained from saponification of the triglycerides. Fatty alcohols, which are used to produce fatty alchol ethoxylates, need a saponification step to obtain the fatty acid, followed by a reduction, usually via the methyl ester, to obtain the alcohol. 

Whilst the book will be of obvious interest to anyone concerned with seawater environmental protection, it is believed that it will also be of interest to other groups of workers, including River Authorities who have to implement legal requirements regarding seawater pollution, oceanographers, fisheries experts and politicians who create and implement environmental policies, and the news media, who are responsible for making the general public aware of environmental matters. 

All these contaminants enter into the environment through human activities (urban waste, deposits of the waste cleaning plants and agricultural cultivations) [45] and various other pathways (atmospheric and fluvial transport) [46]. Environmental pollution by these groups of organic compounds has received considerable attention as a result of public awareness towards environmental problems and expectations for good quality of life [13]. 

More and more chemically sensitive people contacted us when they became aware of our efforts, so we decided to form a group. We persuaded the Capital Regional District health officer to back us up in a survey to establish there was a population of people here with environmental illness. We thought there might be twenty-five or so people. But we heard from people way up-island and in the interior and Vancouver. We stopped at two hundred and fifty. Many wrote on their survey forms, You mean I m not the only one ... 

Finally, PBDEs—mainly three commercial mixtures known as Penta-BDE, Octa-BDE, and Deca-BDE—are still widely used as flame retardants in products such as polymers, resins, electronic devices, building materials, textiles, and the polyurethane foam padding used in furniture and carpets. The intensive production and use of these compounds has made them ubiquitous in the environment and in biota.125,126 EPA is working with industry, governments, and environmental and public health groups to research and better understand the potential health risks posed by these substances.127 The European Commission is also aware of these risks to the environment and public health and has established EQS in the low ppt level. Thus, for Penta-BDE, the annual average (AA) EQS is 0.0005 pg L 1 for inland surface waters and 0.0002 pg L 1 for other surface waters. There...
