Environmental awareness

Environmental awareness is a prime concern in all KOH plants. Safety precautions required in KOH and chlorine operations are well documented in operating manuals and sales brochures pubUshed by all commercial producers. Discharges of waste effluents containing mercury are strictly forbidden. 

Because sulfur suppHes, either as elemental sulfur or by-product sulfuric acid, have grown owiag to iacreased environmental awareness, demand for sulfur has decreased ia some consuming iadustries for the same reason. Industries such as titanium dioxide productions, which traditionally utilized sulfuric acid, have concerted to more environmentally friendly processes. In addition, many consumers who contiaue to use sulfuric acid are puttiag an emphasis on regenerating or recycling spent acid. 

Increased environmental awareness contiaues to create new challenges as well as a variety of new market opportunities for sulfur producers. Further pollution reduction requirements contiaue to iacrease gradually aoadiscretioaary suppHes of sulfur and sulfur products. At the same time, recycling and reengineering have caused slight decreases ia demand. These trends are likely to contiaue ia the future. 

Corporate environmentalism is an evolving concept for environmental protection. In this case, business takes a pro-active stance independent of regulatory authorities. This can be in recognition of social responsibilities, but is more successful when compelled by competition in the market place. Thus, a hrm can conscientiously target environmentally aware consumers (through marketing environmentally friendly products or processes) or can be better placed for hnancial support from ethical investment funding bodies. 

The buyers of motor vehicles have been substantially positive concerning the need to have cleaner running vehicles. Although the required emission control devices and other mandated safety equipment have increased the cost of new motor vehicles, sales have not been significantly effected. The current environmental awareness and concern are evidence of the general population s new found knowledge and acceptance of both mobile and stationary source emission controls.

Pressure groups in the environmentally aware political parties can make excessive demands. Often good public relations meetings can meet these, but the more reputable cooling tower suppliers can be invaluable in dealing with such matters. 

Create environmental awareness by developing a regular (e.g., monthly) good housekeeping day. 

The overall result of environmental awareness has been to increase the interplay of devolution and evolution. Devolution has seen increasing restrictions, sometimes amounting to a complete ban, on the use of certain substances (e.g. alkylphenolethoxylates, which were once widely used) and a corresponding evolution of new products which, at least for the present, are environmentally acceptable. This interplay between devolution and evolution is likely to continue indefinitely. Environmental factors as they affect specific types of auxiliary will be dealt with under the relevant sections of this volume. 

However, environmental awareness, in addition to commercial and technical exploitation, has resulted in considerable activity in this area, leading to a greatly expanded range of products in recent years, as well as some conflicting statements with regard to their environmental properties. The increase in environmental awareness and the acute effects of some toxic compounds have raised questions over the safety of using many chemicals invented for agricultural and industrial applications. A great deal of current research addresses the management and remediation of old contaminated sites. Recent concerns regard the safety of consumer chemicals, especially nanomaterials the effect of pharmaceuticals on ecosystems and the combined effect that chemical cocktails have on human and ecosystem health. 

An environmentally acceptable manner may be defined as being both in compliance with all relevant state and federal environmental regulations and In accord with the common sense and good judgement of an environmentally aware professional. 

However, the amount of water was virtually independent of the laundry weight and therefore the washing of smaller loads became ineffective. New techniques, such as the Mengenautomatik , created a correlation between the wash load and the water requirement. A consumption of 70 1 of water for 5 kg of laundry and 50 1 for 1 kg was achieved. This is clearly a noticeable reduction, but there was still a wide gap between the specific water consumption of large and small laundry loads. With a full load it was possible to wash with 14 1/kg, while a 1 kg load still required 50 1/kg (Fig. 5.63). The Mengenautomatik was therefore a solution that in time could not keep up with the growing environmental awareness of both manufacturers and consumers. 

Kinnucan et al. (1990) observed that there is a relationship between age and farmers adoption behavior. While younger, less experienced farmers are expected to be more environmentally aware and more likely to adopt sustainable practices, there is no consensus regarding the relationship between farmers age and environmental concern.
