Several international organizations have been estabUshed that can offer conservation advice or even practical help in areas of the world where such is not readily available. The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and the Conservation of Cultural Properties (ICCROM), based in Rome, is an intergovernmental organization that serves over 80 member states, among which is the United States. In the United States, the National Institute for Conservation of Cultural Property (NIC) serves as a fomm to faciUtate information distribution and exchange, coordination and planning between institutions and representatives of the various professions, and to promote pubHc and government awareness of the need for conservation of the cultural... 

Ana.lytica.1 Methods. Since 1984, dramatic technical advances have been made in the analysis of trace organic chemicals in the environment. Indeed, these advances have been largely responsible for the increased pubUc and governmental awareness of the wide distribution of herbicides in the environment. The abiUty to detect herbicides at ppb and ppt levels has resulted in the discovery of trace herbicide residues in many unexpected and unwanted areas. The realization that herbicides are being transported throughout the environment, albeit at extremely low levels, has caused much pubUc and governmental concern. However, the pubUc health implications remain unclear. 

With the ever increasing awareness of the need of environment protection, the emission of solvent vapors and organic fumes into the atmosphere should be prevented by treating the exhaust through a proper scmbber. The solvent used for cleaning the reactor is usually consumed as part of the thinning solvent. Aqueous effluent should be properly treated before discharge.

Century organic vapour analysers are factory calibrated to measure total organic vapours according to a standard (methane). Since different organic vapours interact with the flame ionization detector (FID) to varying extents, it is vital that the instrument user be aware of the magnitude of the variation in order to obtain the most accurate data. Each user must determine relative responses for the individual instrument. 

In addition to the health hazards mentioned above, it is important be aware of the potential for explosions due to the Cannizzarro reaction ([77], pp. 36-37). When strong alkali is mixed with formaldehyde solutions, the Cannizzarro reaction will result in a rapid and spontaneous reaction even at relatively low temperatures. Depending on conditions, an induction period may be seen. The main organic products of this reaction are methanol and formic acid (salt form). In addition, significant amounts of hydrogen are evolved. The potential for explosions in closed containers is high, and even open containers will often erupt.
