Hazards awareness devices

Many ways to control hazards have been used over the years but usually these can be broken down into five primary approaches. The preferred ways to do this are through engineering controls, awareness devices, predetermined safe work practices, and administrative controls. When these controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection, an alternative or supplementary method of protection is to provide workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) and the know-how to use it properly. 

For filter boxes, provide remote and automatic filter box lid closing on trip of appropriate fire detection device. In addition to the machine guarding, the control system should be interlocked with an electronically monitored failsafe system. The control software should have an awareness of the position and action of all moving parts and measurement devices. Therefore, if an unplanned incident or out-of-protocol action does occur, the system will take action or stop action to minimize the likelihood of additional safety hazards. In some cases, as with system calibration or super user access, graded access levels can be custom-built into the design for specialized and infrequent operations.

Employers must furnish the tools needed for safe electrical work, such as insulated voltagerated hand tools and voltage sensing devices. Maintenance of equipment under the fire prevention plan. Certain equipment is often installed in workplaces to control heat sonrces or to detect fuel leaks. An example is a temperature limit switch often found on deep-fat food fryers found in restaurants. There may be similar switches for high-temperature diptanks, or flame failure and flashback arrester devices on furnaces and similar heat-producing equipment. If these devices are not properly maintained or if they become inoperative, a definite fire hazard exists. Specific standards have not been adopted for the installation, adjustment, and maintenance of RF presence-sensing devices. Employers nsing snch devices should have had safety hazard analyses performed to determine potential failnres or limitations of the devices in their applications. Employers should be aware that the performance of a CPS device may be affected as environmental and physical conditions are changed. 

Training for engineers and maintenance personnel should consist of an explanation or a discussion of the general hazards of violence, the prevention and correction of security problems, and personal protection devices and techniques. They need to be acutely aware of how to avoid creating hazards in the process of their work.
