Referring to current awareness journals or computer databases these are useful for keeping you up to date with current research they usually provide a monthly listing of article details (title, authors, source, author address) arranged by subject and cross-referenced by subject and author. Current awareness of new chemical reactions can. in principle. be organized in databases as for other types of queries, with search profiles that are automatically executed at each database update ( alerts . SDls ). Because of the frequency of updating (see Section 3.2), at present this only makes sense for CASREACT. A scientifically evaluated and fully referenced data bank, developed and maintained by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It contains some 8,000 chemical records with carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, tumor promotion, and tumor inhibition test results. Data are derived from studies cited in primaiy journals, current awareness tools, NCI reports, and other special sources. Test results have been reviewed by experts in carcinogenesis and mutagenesis. 

PC-Based Information Products Floppy Disk Based. We currently have ready access to a rapidly growing variety of relevant information resources. From a current awareness perspective, an excellent source of weekly information is the floppy disk-based product called Current Contents on Diskette (CCOD). Several versions are available however, the Life Sciences version is most appropriate for this review because of its coverage, on a weekly basis, of over 1200 journals describing work in the biological sciences. One will note that the product has several useful features, including very quick retrieval of article citations as well as several output options (including either hard copy or electronic storage of references as well as reprint requests). 

The biochemical literature is massive and expanding rapidly. It is almost a full-time job just to maintain a current awareness of a specialized research area. There are few disciplinary boundaries in the study of biochemistry. The biochemical literature overlaps into the biological sciences, the physical sciences, and the basic medical sciences. The intent of the following discussion is to bring some order to the many textbooks, reference books, research journals, computer information retrieval services, and handbooks that are available.

Monographs and conference proceedings added in 1976. Corresponds to Index Medicus. Contains full bibliographic citations and index terms for all records. Some abstracts included. Recently published scientific papers are not usually accessible using MEDLINE or similar systems. To keep up to date, it is necessary either to thumb through the title pages of current issues of the scientific journals or, where these are available, to access journals on-line. Alternatively, the following current awareness titles can be used Current Contents and Reference Update. 

This perspective has examined the approaches to molecular modeling and drug design and emphasized their limitations. The reader should be aware, however, that these tools are daily used on many problems of therapeutic interest with increasing success. This is clearly witnessed by publications of such studies in almost every issue of current major journals. Many commercial current awareness services are available, and the most useful of these to the organometallic chemist is Current Contents. This consists of a weekly collection of photoreproduced contents pages of journals, together with a list of first author s addresses. The edition most likely to be consulted by the organometallic chemist is the Physical and Chemical Sciences section (originally separate Physical Sciences and Chemical Sciences editions). 

Pharmacotherapy, The Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy, is the official journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and is published monthly. Pharmacotherapy is peer reviewed and is indexed in Index Medicus, Current Contents, Exerpta Medica, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, and Referativnyi Zhumal. 

Current Contents Life Sciences. Philadelphia, PA Institute for Scientific Information. Weekly. Current awareness service providing tables of contents from over 1370 life sciences journals. Current Contents is divided into seven broad disciplinary sections, with Medicinal Chemistry coverage included in the Life Sciences section. Available online. 

Current Contents /Clinical Medicine. Philadelphia, PA Thomson ISI. Provides tables of contents and bibliographic information from recently published editions of over 1120 medical journals. Current awareness is the main focus of this resource, so it is an especially good source for finding recent publications. The database is updated weekly and is available in a variety of different formats and platforms. Other relevant subject editions include Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences, and Current Contents/Life Sciences. Available online. 

Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (RAPS). URL http // www.raps.org. The RAPS Web site is a good source of information on educational publications available for purchase, as well as forthcoming training seminars and professional conferences focused on regulatory topics. The Society s monthly journal and adjunct current awareness services are accessible only to members. 

Current Awareness. Scanning the Literature Cited in subsequent chapters quickly identifies journals to be monitored in each field. However, the the volume of primary literature, reviews, and symposia challenges even the most diligent observer. 

Chemical Industry Notes is a current-awareness service covering activities in the chemical industry and related industrial fields. Published weeklv, this publication monitors approximately 80 leading business and trade journals worldwide. Each issue covers such areas as industrial management, investment, marketing, pricing, and production with brief but informative article extracts, bibliographic citations, and keyword and corporate indexes. 

C4 SELECTS PLUS is a scries of more than 35 printed current-awareness bulletins—each topic a separate publication. Topics include CA abstracts and associated bibliographic information selected by computer from the CA database. With CA SELECTS PLUS, in addition to coverage of the usual relevant journals, 1 350 key journals are covered in their entirety with references including letters to the editor, meeting notes, and editorials. 

The primary sources for acquiring the FIA references have been the CHEMABS base of the ESA-IRS (European Space Agency-Information Retrieval Service) Current Awareness Service, and the Physical Chemical, and Earth Sciences section of Current Contents published by the Institute for Scientific Information, Inc. These sources have been supplemented by our own scrutiny of available periodicals of the analytical chemical literature, by the FIA bibliography listed in the recently launched Japanese Journal of Flow Injection Analysis, and by reprints supplied kindly to us by authors themselves. 

The latter regularly includes a section called current awareness which lists recent literature relevant to drug safety. Another journal which is very useful in that respect is Reactions Weekly which is primarily an alerting service based on case reports but also covers topical issues and news in the field. All these journals are available in both paper and electronic formats and access is essential for anyone working in the field. 

Chemical Reactions Documentation Service designed for both current awareness and retrospective retrieval. Its monthly publication, the Journal of Synthetic Methods, covers the journal and patent literature, and provides 3,000 abstracts of recently published papers annually, together with 3,000 supplementary references. 

Scholarly journals form the cornerstone of technical information exchange in aerospace and aeronautical engineering. Journals serve as both an announcement vehicle for new advances and as an archival medium. The conference literature and the technical report literature also are important pathways for announcing research results in the field. Trade journals serve as a current awareness... 

The standard commercial publishers—Springer, John Wiley Sons, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Elsevier, Newnes, and Morgan Kaufmann as well as the society publishers IEEE Press and ACM—carry many monographic titles catering to the research and educational communities. Many of these publishers also publish journals. For more information, see the Journals and Current Awareness sections. Then, we have the practitioner market served by such publishers as O Reilly (the major player), Peachtree Press, Prentice Hall PTR, Que, and Sam s Publishing (see Tools for the Practitioner section).

In other parts of the world, reference journals were also founded In 1927, the first issue of the journal Nippon Kagaku Soran was published in Japanese. This journal has abstracted the Imown chemical literature in Japan since 1877. The Japan Information Center of Science and Technology (JICST), which was founded 1957, took over the reference journal in 1958 for financial reasons and continued publishing it with the new title Domestic Chemistry Series of JICST Current Awareness. The rest of the world did not take very much notice of Japanese publications, now and then an article was cited in Chemisches Zen-tralblatt or Chemical Abstracts although this Japanese reference journal was essential for Japanese chemists. The number of publications, which were cited in Chemical Abstracts increased steadily (34 abstracts in 1907 109,800 in 1991), the systematic access to the Japanese chemical literature was organized after the Second World War Since 1977, the Japan Association for International Chemical Information (JAICI), a department of JICST, has cooperated with Chemical Abstracts Service and since 1980, all CA abstracts of Japanese publications have been written by JAICI. 

For current awareness, in addition to the main polymer journals, the reader is referred to the series Developments in Polymer Degradation, which contains review articles in particular subject areas and to the specialist journal Polymer Degradation and Stability,... 

In the rest of this chapter, we consider examples of references to journal articles and books. Both numerical and alphabetical references are addressed. These examples are included to increase your awareness of the level of detail that is needed to format references correctly and to showcase the many differences in formatting that exist across journals. If you are preparing a manuscript for submission, do not rely on these examples, but consult a recent issue of the target journal and its Information for Authors before you prepare your references. It is ultimately your responsibility to check that your references adhere to the journal s current practices. 

Discussion of the current state by major publications such as The Economist (8), the Wall Street Journal (9) and the Business Week (10) add to a growing awareness of a need for improvement.
