Awareness continuous education

At a recent continuing-education seminar, Dr. Hamilton and her staff pharmacists learned of the potential for a significant interaction between the two medications in question. She was puzzled as to why one of the pharmacists would have told a physician that there are no drug interaction problems with the new drug. Dr. Hamilton and the staff pharmacists are aware that the hospital information technology department has not yet updated the pharmacy department computer system to include this interaction. As she concludes her conversation with Dr. Brown, she promises to find out what happened and take corrective action. 

Moreover, the quaUty of materials and intervention works is of primary importance for the longevity and economy of interventions. However, the system of regulations, recommendations, proper test methods, and specific standards has not been fuUy developed, in spite of continuous efforts of the last decade on national and European level. There is still a gap between knowledge and practice, but undoubtedly the continuous education and joint research efforts, as well as the awareness of the society about safeguarding cultural patrimony, have resulted in significant improvement of consolidation and strengthening works. 

All laboratory persoimel, including the highest levels of management, should receive training and education. Such education will enable them to carry out more efficiently and more effectively their individual processes and functions, to be aware of the relationship of the various laboratory processes, to understand the importance of customer satisfaction and the corporate laboratory objectives and to be able to contribute effectively to the continuous improvement programme. 

Ray Seymour. We first met at Gibson Island some forty years ago at a Gordon Research Conference. Since then, Ray has had an illustrious and eventful career he has been an understanding experimental chemist, a very successful manager and advisor to chemists, and now an excellent educator of chemists. I think that anyone who has followed his career is aware of his numerous contributions to chemistry and we all hope that in his current position at the University of Southern Mississippi he will continue to promote our science as well as make the world a better place to live. Ray is a true gentleman as well as a shining example for a fine scientist. 

John Twyford has responsibility for design and technology at the University of Exeter. He has experience of both primary and secondary education and is actively involved in teachers continuing professional development. He has published in various journals and is author of Design, Capability and Awareness (Longman 1994).
