The Test Case has shown that DRM is able to model the stochastic dynamic aspects of an operation with more accuracy than is possible with static methods. Examples are the position and velocity of aircraft as they evolve through time, the stochastic dynamic behaviour of human operators in response to their environment, situation awareness differences between various actors, multiple scenarios that unfold under influence of hazards occurring, environmental changes, events occurring earlier or later than average, etc. 

As class discussions relate textbook topics to the environmental issues, students become aware of the difficulty of applying what they have learned in class to more complex situation. Although frustrate by the absence of simple right answers, students can be taught to appreciate the process by which scientists evaluate data and adjust hypotheses. 

In one of her most difficult moments Barbara vowed that when she retired she would devote herself to increasing awareness of environmental health issues to improve conditions for others in similar situations. Today she is keeping her word with a burning passion. She is on the board of directors of the Environmental Health Network (EHN) based in Larkspur, California. She is editor of the EHN newsletter—New Reactor—maintains a Web page, and helps to field calls on the EHN support and information hotline. She has worked with San Francisco city officials to develop a sustainable city plan. She was one of the authors of a fragrance-free resolution adopted by the Sierra Club. 

Criminal enforcement of the Substitution Principle is a contentious issue. While the principle can be criminally enforced according to the Environmental Code, criminal enforcement is difficult to use in practice, and so far no one has been charged because he did not substitute chemicals. There has however been at least one case where the environmental authorities have reported a suspected crime based on the fact that a substitution was not made (Kemikalieinspektionen, 1997). Criminal enforcement is still useful as a potential threat. It can be used in a situation where it is easy to prove that the user was aware of the risk of a substance and that there were alternatives. This would typically be the case when the authorities have informed the user of the toxicity of the chemicals used and that substitution possibilities do exist. 

The problem of unusable pesticides, which are a source of environmental pollution as well as a threat to human health, is widespread and common and disposal of bulk quantities is sometimes necessary. The situation is most serious in developing countries where there is little awareness of the inherent dangers of pesticides, and the resources and expertise for handling such problems are very limited. 

Exposure to fungal spores is ubiquitous and, therefore, of pivotal importance for the development of mycoses acquired via the respiratory tract. This situation has also led to increased public awareness of the importance of indoor air quality and to the emergence of aerobiology, which has established itself as a major environmental academic discipline (Levetin and Homer). 

The machinations of environmental dehates have revealed that awareness lies at the root of concern, which, in turn, is instrumental in the investment of effort or attracting support for environmental initiatives. The execution of a CVM survey therefore has to tread a careful path to reveal concern and latent willingness to dedicate economic resources to environmental protection without influencing respondents prevaUing attitudes. In other words, the survey is not intended as an awareness-raising instrument, yet respondents must be empowered by the provision of some decision-making support information in order to mimic a real market situation as closely as possible.
