Awareness Devices

Awareness devices are linked to the senses. They are warning devices that can be heard and seen. They act as alerts to workers, but create no type of physical barrier. They are found in most workplaces and carry with them a moderate degree of effectiveness. Such devices are [Pg.189]

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT A PRACTICAL APPROACH [Pg.190]

Many ways to control hazards have been used over the years but usually these can be broken down into five primary approaches. The preferred ways to do this are through engineering controls, awareness devices, predetermined safe work practices, and administrative controls. When these controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection, an alternative or supplementary method of protection is to provide workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) and the know-how to use it properly. [Pg.9]

For filter boxes, provide remote and automatic filter box lid closing on trip of appropriate fire detection device. Fire detection device may also be interlocked to stop solvent feed, trip deluge internal to filter box and/or trip inert gas blanket for filter box (caution, be aware inert gas is a potential asphyxiation hazard)... [Pg.102]

In many cases, heating or cooling of the gaseous effluent will be required before if enters the control device. The engineer must be thoroughly aware of the gas laws, thermodynamic properties, and reactions involved to secure a satisfactory design. For example, if a gas is cooled there may be condensation if the temperature drops below the dewpoint. If water is sprayed into... [Pg.448]

The buyers of motor vehicles have been substantially positive concerning the need to have cleaner running vehicles. Although the required emission control devices and other mandated safety equipment have increased the cost of new motor vehicles, sales have not been significantly effected. The current environmental awareness and concern are evidence of the general population s new found knowledge and acceptance of both mobile and stationary source emission controls. [Pg.237]

Increased operator awareness can be prompted by use of rate of process variable change, at absolute process variable milestones. For example, devices can indicate or be set to alarm if the rate of temperature rise is 5°C/minute for the 10 minutes preceding a process temperature of 100°C. [Pg.82]

Most researchers were not apparently aware of earlier CNT preparations in the context of ultra-thin vapour-grown carbon fibres (VGCF). This type of CNT is termed pyrolytic (PCNT) and its preparation shows promise of large-scale synthesis. Needless to say, it is of practical importance to provide sufficient CNTs at reasonable cost. This chapter highlights the preparation methods, structural characteristics and current commercial status of PCNTs and includes a description of the devices used hitherto to obtain aligned PCNTs. By way of... [Pg.143]

This concept book is intended for nse by chemical engineers and other technical personnel involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of facilities and eqnipment where deflagration and detonation arresters (DBAs) may be reqnired. These people are nsnally technically competent individnals who are aware of, bnt not experts in, combnstion phenomena. The facilities where snch devices may be needed inclnde chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petrolenm refineries, pharmacentical plants, specialty chemical plants, storage tank farms, loading and nnloading facilities, and pipelines. [Pg.1]

The process designer must be aware of costs as reflected in the (1) selection of a basic process route (2) the equipment to be used in the process and (3) the details incorporated into the equipment. The designer must not arbitrarily select equipment, specify details or set pressure levels for design wdthout recognizing the relative effect on the specific cost of an item as well as associated equipment such as relieving devices, instruments, etc. [Pg.47]

In recent years it has been regarded as somewhat passe to refer to Sir Humphrey Davy in a text on cathodic protection. However, his role in the application of cathodic protection should not be ignored. In 1824 Davy presented a series of papers to the Royal Society in London in which he described how zinc and iron anodes could be used to prevent the corrosion of copper sheathing on the wooden hulls of British naval vessels. His paper shows a considerable intuitive awareness of what are now accepted as the principles of cathodic protection. Several practical tests were made on vessels in harbour and on sea-going ships, including the effect of various current densities on the level of protection of the copper. Davy also considered the use of an impressed current device based on a battery, but did not consider the method to be practicable. [Pg.109]

With plastics that decompose, there may be hazards such as personal bums or wounds and air contamination. Faulty controllers and/or freeze-off can cause the overheating situation from a burned out heater. Safety devices should be used that alert the plant when problems develop people have to be aware of these possible situations. Recognize that personnel injury in plants due to machinery represents 10% of all accidents (Fig. 8-77). [Pg.547]

The crowd was a crowd, seen watering everywhere at the city s lounges, genetically engineered by the world awarenesses of the Internet, wireless devices and cocktail culture. [Pg.157]

Manufacturers should also report incidents where user error resulted in death or a serious deterioration in the state of health, or created a serious threat to public health. The manufacturer is also obliged to monitor trends and report where a significant increase in the level of incidents is observed, even if individual incidents would not be reportable in isolation. Abnormal use events should be addressed to the healthcare facility where they occur. The manufacturer should endeavour to report incidents immediately, once they become aware of the suspected involvement of their device, but in any event the following time limits must be respected ... [Pg.264]

This notice needs to be passed on all those who need to be aware within your organization or to any organisation where the potentially affected devices have been transferred. (If appropriate) Please transfer this notice to other organisations on which this action has an impact (if appropriate). [Pg.272]

There is a large number of available guidelines. These cover a very wide range of topics, and the company submitting an application for a pharmaceutical product should be aware of the contents of these documents and how they interact with other guidelines as well as the interpretation of the legislative requirements. It is necessary to be aware of the impact of guidelines in all areas within the pharmaceutical sector and, in some cases, within the medical device sector. Some of these effects are not obvious from the titles of the documents. [Pg.644]

We should be aware from Table 7.8 that the SHE is an ideal device, and the electrode potential will not be exactly 0 V with non-standard usage. [Pg.330]
