Public awareness of the release of chemicals into the atmosphere has gone beyond the primary ambient pollutants (e.g., SO2 or O3) and governments require air toxics management plans. One component of this process is the characterization of the air quality via sampling.

Pollution control and waste disposal are now under strict regulation at federal, state, and local levels. Enforcement of these regulations has also become more effective. Increased public awareness and media coverage make it difficult for today s polluter to hide behind a screen of ignorance. 

The wide publicity given DDT and the many new pesticides that have been developed during the past few years has made the public aware of the widespread use of spray chemicals. Many misstatements about the poisonous properties of these new products have caused abnormal concern and fear over the possible presence of excessive amounts of spray residues on food crops. This concern is a natural one, because the public does not realize the very small amount of the insecticidal residue that may remain on a single service of food, which usually does not exceed 0.25 pound in weight. Nor does the public realize that only a relatively small percentage of the food we eat has ever been treated with a spray or dust of a specific pesticide. 

Soil contamination was not perceived as a problem until the 1970s, when incidents in the U.S. and Europe (Love Canal, NY Times Beach, MO Lekkerkerk, the Netherlands) awakened public awareness about the serious threats posed to human health and the environment by abandoned or improperly managed hazardous wastes. In response to the growing public concern, the U.S., the Netherlands, and a number of other European countries started a systematic effort beginning in 1980 to identify potentially contaminated sites, assess the level of contamination, establish priorities for remediation based on risk assessment studies and gradually implement the required remedial actions.

A comprehensive public awareness campaign is needed to sensitize the range of actors to their roles and responsibilities. The awareness program should be started before undertaking the pilot so that potential recyclers and technology providers, NGOs, ULBs, private firms, as well as the manufacturers, sellers, and consumers of the FLs are conscious about the elements of the proposed master plan, its implementation, and the need for safe disposal of spent FLs. 

The objective of this research was therefore to develop a master plan for the safe management of end-of-life mercury containing lamps for the entire country. It encompasses detailed analysis of the complete system of logistics (collection, transportation, and safe disposal of end-of-life CFLs/FTLs), financing models, institutional mechanisms, policy framework, and issue of public awareness.

All these contaminants enter into the environment through human activities (urban waste, deposits of the waste cleaning plants and agricultural cultivations) [45] and various other pathways (atmospheric and fluvial transport) [46]. Environmental pollution by these groups of organic compounds has received considerable attention as a result of public awareness towards environmental problems and expectations for good quality of life [13]. 

Lacking methods for increasing the acceptance of selected measurements and measures these methods are needed to convince politicians and support their decision making.
