During the first 1-5 months it is necessary for experts and NCPCs to get an overview of industrial processes and technologies applied in the company to be able to set up a detailed work plan for the implementation of ChL. Since its creation, BiE s experience in working with companies on environmental issues suggests that managers want to know how they compare with other companies. As an awareness-raising exercise, the ICEE is intended to encourage environmental comparison between companies and so encourage companies to improve standards of environmental management.

The machinations of environmental dehates have revealed that awareness lies at the root of concern, which, in turn, is instrumental in the investment of effort or attracting support for environmental initiatives. The execution of a CVM survey therefore has to tread a careful path to reveal concern and latent willingness to dedicate economic resources to environmental protection without influencing respondents prevaUing attitudes. In other words, the survey is not intended as an awareness-raising instrument, yet respondents must be empowered by the provision of some decision-making support information in order to mimic a real market situation as closely as possible.

War and preparation for war have enormous adverse impacts on humans and then-environment. Public health approaches can be utilized to address these problems, including surveillance and documentation, education and awareness-raising, and advocacy for effective policies and programs. 

Finally, this book is challenging and its publication is timely. We should accept that most scientists who are involved in the field of environmental chemistry have limited experience with CW issues, while many of those who work with CW disarmament and nonproliferation issues tend not to have scientific backgrounds. This book provides the basic background to bridge both communities and to understand a bit more about the problem of environmental consequences of war and its aftermath. To minimize the environmental consequences of war and to help prevent war, public-health-based approaches should be developed. This books goes in this direction by providing documentation of the adverse impacts of war on the environment and a bit more education and awareness-raising for the public. 

John Atherton and Frederic Gil state that their ambition for this text is to be an awareness-raising educational tool. Events are described to provide a fundamental understanding of the root causes, the lessons learned and what steps to be taken to prevent a similar recurrence. It is also a tool to give useful references that may be need for more detailed review and analysis. The foreword states that many of the learning opportunity incidents did not happen in our industry. Nevertheless the valuable lessons that can be extracted from them are very relevant and help widen our vision.
