Home and Personal Care Products

Household use of chemicals and chemical products is ultimately a major source of contamination of drinking water in the United States. The EPA has identified 13 major categories of water pollutants in this area. I32 The list and a discussion of each item follows

Ciba is a leading global player in the fine chemicals and additives world, with an extremely wide range of products for the plastics industry and other applieation sectors. The plastics additives cover most of the categories discussed in this report, with particular depth and strength in stabilisers. The company also has many interests outside plasties such as coatings, water and paper treatment, and home and personal care products. Ciba Specialty Chemicals is valued at around CHE 100 billion. Research and development expenditure in 2003 amounted to US 227 M. 

Performance polymers are used transitionally as solid-state materials in construction, transport, electrical engineering, etc., where their bulk mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties are exploited. At the same time, solutions of polymers are found in a large number of industrial processes and applications, from oil recovery to home and personal care products, agriculture, nutrition, etc. Polymerization processes are usually performed in a liquid phase with a subsequent purification of targeted product. 

The shape of both the network and the content of the project also relate to the presence of a company s research facility interest in the delivery of new home and personal care products. Two of its research teams, already involved in cognitive neuroscience and sensory physics, have expertise in cognition and in metrology. They also have experimental facilities customised for exploring material sensory properties and cognitive responses. Thus, they are interested in developing test materials.

In polymer applications derivatives of oils and fats, such as epoxides, polyols and dimerizations products based on unsaturated fatty acids, are used as plastic additives or components for composites or polymers like polyamides and polyurethanes. In the lubricant sector oleochemically-based fatty acid esters have proved to be powerful alternatives to conventional mineral oil products. For home and personal care applications a wide range of products, such as surfactants, emulsifiers, emollients and waxes, based on vegetable oil derivatives has provided extraordinary performance benefits to the end-customer. Selected products, such as the anionic surfactant fatty alcohol sulfate have been investigated thoroughly with regard to their environmental impact compared with petrochemical based products by life-cycle analysis. Other product examples include carbohydrate-based surfactants as well as oleochemical based emulsifiers, waxes and emollients. 

Alcohol ether sulfates (R0(CH2CH20)S03"Na-") - alcohol ethoxy-late reacted with sulfur trioxide and then neutralized in NaOH. Application s include dishwashing liquids and shampoos, home laundry powders, and personal care products. 

Because of volatilization and leaching from their application in consumer and personal care products, phthalate esters are ubiquitous contaminants in indoor environment, and the levels found in dust from homes in different countries (Table 2), showed that the less volatile phthalates such as DEHP and BBP, are the predominant in dust samples [11,16, 74], and that the percentage of both carpet and plastic materials (furniture, decoration, and home electronics) could be associated with higher concentrations of BBP and DEHP in house dust [12, 74, 75]. The toxicology of household products is fascinating because it deals with products that we are all familiar with and because so many different kinds of products are involved. A typical home may contain cleaning products, cosmetics and personal care products, paints, medications, pesticides, fuels, and various solvents. Thermometers and thermostats may contain mercury, a well-known toxicant. Older homes were often painted with a lead-based paint, which if consumed causes serious developmental effects. Building materials may contain toxic solvents that are released into the home. The toxicity and ingredients of household products vary widely, but highly toxic products are found in most homes (Table 18.1). 

In the year 2000, poison centers in the United States responded to nearly two and half million incidents, mosdy home exposures to chemical products, animal bites, and poisonous plants. Over 50% involved children under the age of six. In all, 24,024 incidents resulted in medical outcomes deemed major , and there were 1711 deaths. Almost half (46%) stemmed from exposure to pharmaceutical products. Of the remaining exposures, the largest groups resulted from cosmetics and personal care products and household cleaners. Although the large number of incidents says more about the ubiquity of potentially hazardous products in the home than about their toxicity, the numbers also point out the extent of the potential dangers if products are toxic or if medical aid is not rapidly received. Many more deaths and serious injuries would occur if not for the rapid intervention of poison centers. 

This site provides information about dangerous chemicals found in cosmetics and personal care products, in common cleansers we use at home and at work, and in toxic products we may expose ourselves to every day . 

My husband and I decided to make major changes in our home to reduce my exposure to chemicals. We also went through the usual MCS routine of changing over to less-toxic cleaning products, laundry detergent, and personal care products. I am grateful to my husband, who never questioned the reality of my chemical sensitivity. Like me, he was ready to look for cause and effect. When I had a reaction, the question was what I had eaten or been exposed to, not whether I had had a stressful day. 

In 2004 another reorganisation resulted in the munber of Ciba imits being reduced from five to fom, with special effects products from the home and personal care segment placed under plastics additives. Additives accoimted for 589 M euros or 28% of Ciba Specialty Chemicals total sales in the first half of 2004. This represented a 3% increase compared with 2003. 

The logistics task in fulfilling our objective, with such a business scope, is immense. We have 44 factories around the world and produce several hundreds of different products from food to home and personal care. 

Philips Domestic Appliances and Personal Care (Philips DAP) is one of the product divisions of Royal Philips Electronics, alongside Consumer Electronics, Lighting and Medical Systems. In this article we will focus on sensors that are needed within the DAP division. Philips DAP has four Business Units, each with its own specific field of interest Shaving Grooming, Body Beauty Health, Food Beverage and Home Environment Care. 

Applications for BMs are used to contain many different products that include foodstuffs, beverages, household products (appliances, air conditioners, furniture at home/office/hospital/sports arenas, etc.), personal care products, medicine/pharmaceutical products, automotive parts [bumpers, spoilers, air ducts, seat backs, etc.], construction panels, tote boxes, trays, leisure items (toys, floatation, marine buoys, canoes, sailboards, sports goods, etc.), industrial parts (business machines, tool boxes, trash containers, hot water tanks, etc.), and so on.215-217...

A large number of chemicals have been shown to precipitate MCS. The sources of these chemicals include industrial chemicals, off-gassing in tightly sealed buildings, polluted air and water in areas contaminated by industrial discharges, and toxic waste site releases, and those from the use of consumer products, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, paints, adhesives, pesticides, and other chemical products used around the home. Table 26.2 lists some of the individual compounds that have been associated with MCSJ12 161...
