The company was a private label manufacturer of home maintenance and personal care products. Its laboratory would be involved with new product development, evaluation of raw materials, testing of competitive products, and quality control. Laboratory personnel would also be responsible for chemical safety in the plant and for proper waste disposal. 

The short list of chemicals represents only a small fraction of the inputs applied throughout North America. Lindane, malathion, MCPP, metolachlor, metribuzin, oryzalin, pendimethalin, and pronamide are just a few other of the dozens of formulations for insect and weed control available at any hardware or home maintenance store. All of them are toxic to some degree or another, and question marks hang over many of them as to the risk they may pose for people and the ambient environment. The potential hazards of each of the chemicals described above hints at the range of contemporary hazards associated with lawn care. 

Independence can be a matter of interpretation. For example, those who choose residential living may consider themselves independent because they accept a minimum of services from others. Those who choose to live in a retirement community may consider themselves independent because they need not spend time performing home-maintenance services and therefore are free to travel more. 

Construction and maintenance materials used by home residents are identical to those used commercially by safety-trained professionals. Whereas professional users are required to undergo training for the safe use of hazardous chemical products, home users are under no such constraint. As a result, people are exposed to numerous toxic exposures in the home. A representative list of products containing toxic chemicals that are regularly used in home maintenance projects is shown in Table 11.7.

The effect of inflation in the trade sales area has been felt in the period 1979-82. Note in Table III the sharp increase in the calculated unit value of architectural finishes—compared with the static real unit value predicted for 1987 (as compared to 1982). The decrease in housing starts in 1979-82, resulting in lower house paint shipments, has been partially balanced by increased home maintenance. The trade sales market is relatively mature long range, few major formulation changes are expected with little increase in the real value of finished goods. 

Despite its maturity, the trade sales market has reasonably good growth potentlal-because of the pent-up demand for new housing and the proclivity of the buying public to engage in home maintenance projects during times of recession.

The mechanical properties of acryUc and modacryUc fibers are retained very well under wet conditions. This makes these fibers well suited to the stresses of textile processing. To meet the 2001 U.S. energy standards and the 2003 phase-out of HCFCs, there is a great incentive to develop a significantly better thermal insulation. The most dramatic approach would use vacuum panels for insulating the cabinet. A number of U.S. and Japanese manufacturers have developed such panels and placed these kinds of refrigerators in homes. The panels consist of multilayer plastic envelopes filled with precipitated (fumed) silica. The claimed thermal conductivity is one-fourth that of polyurethane foam. The two major obstacles are cost and the maintenance of vacuum for twenty years. 

When vinyl is chosen for laboratory floor use, the heavier commercial grade is recommended over the thinner material often used in homes. The cushioned type, while easier to walk on, does not have sufficient ability to withstand laboratory wear and tear. Neither does the no-wax type. Good maintenance should include regular waxing, which will greatly increase the ability of any flooring to resist damage from wear and from chemical spills. 

As any home owner knows, no water faucet or valve is maintenance free. A laboratory operator should for that reason have repair parts and proper tools available at all times. 

Maintenance is a never-ending task. Equipment manufacturers are normally very specific about periodic care of the products they sell, but many maintenance tasks are similar to those performed around the home. Minor repairs done in time will often prevent the development of unsafe conditions, as well as keep equipment in good working shape.

Most engineers are aware of the importance of preventive maintenance programs, especially those owning automobiles or homes. A little neglect can cause serious property damage and may be the genesis of serious accidents for example, poorly maintained brake systems have inevitable consequences.
