Explain procedure and discuss pain during procedure and post-operative morbidity complications (Table 19.2). Don t minimize the severity of the post-peeling phase, which may preclude social activities for several days. 

Inattention — has difficulty paying attention to details in school, work, and social activities, difficulty completing tasks that require a lot of mental effort is easily distracted, forgetful. 

The Alzheimer s Association recommends staying physically, mentally, and socially active, adopting a low-fat/low-cholesterol diet rich in dark vegetables and fruit, and managing body weight. 

The goals of treatment of SAD are to reduce the physiologic symptoms and phobic avoidance, increase participation in desired social activities, and improve quality of life. 

The first of these vulnerabilities is called lifestyle imbalance. Lifestyle imbalances occur when a person spends too much time in one life domain, such as working too much without a balance of recreation, or having too much free time and not enough structure. There are several life activities that seem important for lifestyle balance, including eating healthy and exercising, spirituality, intellectual endeavors, healthy emotional expression, social activities and relationships,... 

This idealized process is often misinterpreted as applying to scientists individually rather than to the scientific enterprise as a whole. Science is a social activity, and one scientist s theory or proposal cannot become accepted unless it has been published, peer reviewed, criticized, and finally accepted by the scientific community. 

Medications for symptomatic relief from vertigo consist of antiemetics, benzodiazepines and antihistamines. They are all mostly aimed at the psychological consequences of dizziness and can all have highly unfavourable side effects, for example, sedation, anticholinergic effects and insomnia. The psychological consequences of dizziness in elderly should rather be treated with information about the condition, supportive help actions and increased social activities, than with drugs.

Chronic use has been associated with an "amotivational syndrome" characterized by loss of interest in social activities, school, work, or other goal-directed activities. Cannabis use is cited as the cause of this phenomenon, but there is no evidence to support any causal relationship. There is evidence, however, that the symptoms of the "amotivational syndrome" are secondary to depression (Musty and Kraback 1995). In contrast to ethanol, there is no evidence to support that cannabis causes an increase in violent behavior (Murray 1986). However, cannabis use may be contraindicated in those with preexisting psychiatric disturbances such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. 

Untreated, dysthymic disorder is often a persistent, lifelong illness. It leads to significant functional disability, interfering with work productivity and participation in family and social activities. In addition, untreated dysthymic disorder often progresses to chronic or recurrent major depression. 

The enonnous size of the perfume industry suggests a relationship between olfaction and, hence pheromones, and social activity and sexnal stimnlation. 

If the culture of science is responsible for the loss of many students, including curricular materials from the social studies of science actually may help students recognize, understand, and overcome their estrangement. Scientists can no longer afford to ignore the fact that science is a social activity, with norms, attitudes, and practices shaped by history, institutions, beliefs, and values (see Lederman, 2004). 

The effects of stimulant medication generally cease upon discontinuation of the treatment. One double-blind study, however, did not find this to be necessarily true for DEX (Gillberg et ah, 1997). Many patients favor a period off the medication, a drug holiday, to deal with the partial suppression of weight gain, worries about long-term effects, or to assess the need for staying on medication. This type of trial is best done when the child is not scheduled for important school tests or social activities (e.g., summer camp).

Formerly called simple phobia, specific phobia is a marked, excessive, or unreasonable and persistent fear of a specific object or situation (e g., snakes, heights, thunderstorms). Exposure to the phobic stimulus provokes immediate and intense anxiety that the individual recognizes as excessive or unreasonable. The degree of impairment frequently depends on whether the feared object or situation is commonly encountered or can be easily avoided. The diagnosis should only be made if avoidant behavior interferes with the person s normal routine, social activities, or relationships, or if there is marked distress about having the fear. Differential diagnosis may include the following ... 

There are several hundred types of microcapsules being used as a food additive in the U.S. today. Most of these are used in the development and production of artifical flavors or natural flavors and spices. Microcapsules as food additives may be added to enhance or alter appearance. Food is not only consumed for its calories or nutrients. It is also part of our cultural experience and it must be appealing in all of its aspects. It is not just a biological necessity, its consumption is a social activity, an esthetic experience and an expression of cultural and personal experiences. This means that food must not only taste good but it also must have the right color, texture and aroma. 

The obsessions or compulsions caused marked distress, are time-consuming (take more than 1 hour per day), or significantly interfere with occupational or academic functioning or with usual social activities or relationships. 

Move from an activity where you are happy alone (working on a craft) to a social activity (dancing, bingo). 

Leisure is not inactivity. It includes a variety of hobbies, travel, sports, educational entertainment, and social activities.
