Philips Domestic Appliances and Personal Care (Philips DAP) is one of the product divisions of Royal Philips Electronics, alongside Consumer Electronics, Lighting and Medical Systems. In this article we will focus on sensors that are needed within the DAP division. Philips DAP has four Business Units, each with its own specific field of interest Shaving Grooming, Body Beauty Health, Food Beverage and Home Environment Care. [Pg.68]

Over the years, DAP has proven itself with numerous innovations such as the Quadra Action and the Cool Skin in Shaving Grooming and the Cellesse and the Satin-Ice in Body Beauty. Philips DAP has also forged a few strategic marketing alliances, for example with Beiersdorf for the development and production of the additive for the Cool Skin shaver. Last year Philips DAP acquired the Optiva Corporation, a major US producer of electric toothbmshes, and became market leader in oral care products in North America. [Pg.69]

The cleaning process proceeds by one of three primary mechanisms solubilization, emulsification, and roll-up [229]. In solubilization the oily phase partitions into surfactant micelles that desorb from the solid surface and diffuse into the bulk. As mentioned above, there is a body of theoretical work on solubilization [146, 147] and numerous experimental studies by a variety of spectroscopic techniques [143-145,230]. Emulsification involves the formation and removal of an emulsion at the oil-water interface the removal step may involve hydrodynamic as well as surface chemical forces. Emulsion formation is covered in Chapter XIV. In roll-up the surfactant reduces the contact angle of the liquid soil or the surface free energy of a solid particle aiding its detachment and subsequent removal by hydrodynamic forces. Adam and Stevenson s beautiful photographs illustrate roll-up of lanoline on wood fibers [231]. In order to achieve roll-up, one requires the surface free energies for soil detachment illustrated in Fig. XIII-14 to obey... [Pg.485]

Phenyl-ethyl alcohol, CgH. CHj. CHjOH, is the next highest homologue of the benzyl alcohol series. It is found naturally in rose -and neroli oils but as it is very soluble in water, it practically disappears from the distilled otto of rose and is dissolved in the rose water. Hence otto of rose with its beautiful perfume does not truly represent the odour of the rose. By the use of various isolated and synthetic bodies an artificial otto can be prepared which more closely resembles the rose odour than does the natural otto itself. But it is doubtful whether any really good artificial otto of rose can be prepared without some natural otto as its basis. [Pg.127]

Music is one of the great art forms and provides listeners powerful emotions by twisting all ranges of human feelings, from earthy to heavenly and from physics to metaphysics. However, this principal applies in many human activities. When the appeal of a subject to the senses or emotions increases beyond a certain threshold, people find beauty in it and it becomes Art . For example, when Olympic athletes run in a 100 meter race, we feel the excitement of their performance and we sense the amazing movements of the human body, finding beauty in them. That is Art . [Pg.292]

The deep shaft plant at Ohtsu Paper Co. came on line in 1980. It treats the wastewater generated by a cardboard recycling facility located within 18.3 m (60 ft) of a residential area inside the city of Ohtsu. The plant discharges treated wastewater to a beautiful recreational body of water named Lake Biwa. [Pg.902]

Perturbation theory is one of the oldest and most useful, general techniques in applied mathematics. Its initial applications to physics were in celestial mechanics, and its goal was to explain how the presence of bodies other than the sun perturbed the elliptical orbits of planets. Today, there is hardly a field of theoretical physics and chemistry in which perturbation theory is not used. Many beautiful, fundamental results have been obtained using this approach. Perturbation techniques are also used with great success in other fields of science, such as mathematics, engineering, and economics. [Pg.33]

The experience of the subatomic world of UPAs is one of almost sensory overload In the three whorls flow currents of different electricities the seven vibrate in response to etheric waves of all kinds—to sound, light, heat, etc. they show the seven colors of the spectrum give out the seven sounds of the natural scale respond in a variety of ways to physical vibration—flashing, singing, pulsing bodies, they move incessantly, inconceivably beautiful and brilliant (1908, 7). [Pg.86]

Adequate vitamin A is also required for the health of the surface structures of the human body skin, the lining of the digestive system, lungs, and mouth. These structures, particularly the skin, are an important part of the human defense system against infection. When they are compromised, the human body becomes increasingly susceptible to infection, a profound problem in areas of poor public health resources. This story, and what has been done in response, is beautifully told in Philip Hilts book Rxfor Survival. ... [Pg.195]

Osiris also had a brother, Set, who was evil and jealous of Osiris abilities and popularity. Because he was jealous, Set decided to kill Osiris. To accomplish this he had a beautiful box made to the exact shape and size of Osiris body and invited his brother, many of their friends, and 72 evil accomplices, to a feast. At the banquet Set declared that he would award the beautifully crafted box to the person who fit in it the best. All of the guests took turns lying in the box, but of course, it only fit Osiris. No sooner had Osiris lain down in the box... [Pg.24]
