This combination is highly effective against most aerobic enteric bacteria except P. aeruginosa. High urinary tract tissue levels and urine levels are achieved, which may be important in complicated infection treatment. Also effective as prophylaxis for recurrent infections. Well tolerated, low cost. Palienls with sulfa allergies may preclude its use. [Pg.1155]

IL-13 KO mice failed to clear infection despite mounting equivalent type 2 cytokine responses to wild-type mice. Further evidence of a role for IL-13 in expulsion is shown in studies utilizing BALB/c IL-4 KO mice. While control mice cleared infection, treatment with A25 (a soluble IL-13 receptor alpha 2-human IgG-Fc fusion protein) prevented worm expulsion. (Data adapted from Bancroft et al., 1998 A.J. Bancroft, unpublished.)... [Pg.344]

Treatment for HCV infection is necessary because a high percentage of acutely infected patients develop chronic infections. Treatment is indicated in patients previously untreated who have chronic HCV, circulating HCV RNA, increased alanine transaminases levels, evidence on biopsy of moderate to severe hepatic grade and stage, and compensated liver disease. [Pg.292]

FIGURE 25-3. Suggested response-optimized chronic hepatitis C virus infection treatment regimens. (Data from Dienstag JL, McHutchinson JG. American Gastroenterological Association technical review of the management of hepatitis C. Gastroenterology 2006 30 231 -264.)... [Pg.293]

T Cells May Contribute to the Defects in Innate Immune Response in Atopic Dermatitis Most patients with atopic dermatitis are colonized with S. aureus and experience exacerbation of their skin disease after infection with this organism [2]. In patients with S. aureus infection, treatment with anti-staphylococcal substances can result in the reduction of skin disease. Binding of S. aureus to the epidermis is enhanced by atopic skin inflammation. This is supported by clinical studies demonstrating that treatment with topical corticosteroids or tacrolimus reduces S. aureus counts in atopic dermatitis. [Pg.103]

Terbinafine is available for oral administration and is indicated for fungal nail infections. Treatment with terbinafine for nail infections can take up to 3 months depending on the condition, with a minimum duration of 6 weeks. Photosensitivity may occur as a side-effect to terbinafine. [Pg.40]

Streptococcal infections - Treatment with the recommended dosage is usually given in a single session using multiple IM sites when indicated. An alternative dosage schedule may be used, giving half the total dose on day 1 and half on day 3. This will also ensure adequate serum levels over a 10-day period however, use only when the patient s cooperation can be ensured. [Pg.1464]

Neonatal herpes simplex virus infection Treatment of neonatal herpes infections. Parenteral Treatment of initial and recurrent mucosal and cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV)-I and -2 and varicella-zoster virus (VZV/shingles) infections in immunocompromised patients. [Pg.1752]

Severe lower respiratory tract infections - Treatment of hospitalized infants and young children with severe lower respiratory tract infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). [Pg.1772]

HIV infection Treatment of HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents. [Pg.1809]

Infections Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva or cornea (eg, conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, acute meibomianitis, dacryocystitis) caused by strains of microorganisms susceptible to antibiotics. [Pg.2104]

Ribavirin aerosol (Virazole) is indicated in the treatment of high-risk infants and young children with severe bronchiolitis or pneumonia due to RSV infection. Treatment is most effective if begun within 3 days of the onset of symptoms. [Pg.580]

For ascariasis, the dosage of piperazine (as the hexahydrate) is 75 mg/kg (maximum dose, 3.5 g) orally once daily for 2 days. For heavy infections, treatment should be continued for 3-4 days or repeated after 1 week. [Pg.1154]

The standard dosage, 25 mg/kg (maximum 1.5 g) twice daily, should be given after meals. Tablets should be chewed. For strongyloides infection, treatment is for 2 days. Cure rates are reportedly 93%. A course can be repeated in 1 week if indicated. In patients with hyperinfection syndrome, the standard dose is continued twice daily for 5-7 days. For cutaneous larva migrans, thiabendazole cream can be applied topically, or the oral drug can be given for 2 days (although albendazole is less toxic and therefore preferred). [Pg.1157]

Is a site-specific application required or is it preferable for the drug to be distributed rapidly throughout the vaginal space, as might be the case for an anti-infective treatment ... [Pg.407]

Drug Iodine Principal Indication(s) Adhesive capsulitis and other soft-tissue adhesions microbial infections Treatment Rationale Iodine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, hence its use in infections, etc. the scle-rolytic actions of iodine are not fully understood Iontophoresis 5°/o-10°/o solution or ointment from negative pole Phonophoresis 10% ointment... [Pg.620]

Bacitracin is indicated in prophylaxis and treatment of local infections, treatment of secondary pyodermas, as an adjunct in burn treatment, and as prophylaxis in operative wounds. However, it is not indicated in the treatment of chronic ulcers because of the increased risk of allergic reactions. There are several reports of delayed hypersensitivity, acute IgE-mediated allergic reactions, and anaphylactic reactions to bacitracin.51-53... [Pg.395]
