C. It is secreted along with noradrenaline by the adrenal medulla, from which it may be obtained. It may be synthesized from catechol. It is used as the acid tartrate in the treatment of allergic reactions and circulatory collapse. It is included in some local anaesthetic injections in order to constrict blood vessels locally and slow the disappearance of anaesthetic from the site of injection. Ultimately it induces cellular activation of phosphorylase which promotes catabolism of glycogen to glucose. [Pg.16]

It is a powerful antagonist of histamine, antagonizing its effect on smooth muscle of the bronchioles, bladder and partially the intestines and preventing the dilation of capillaries. Promethazine is used in the treatment of allergic reactions. [Pg.328]

Process methods were developed for the preparation of a stable, physiologically acceptable solution of alburnin [103218-45-7] the principal osmotic protein in blood. Eady preparations, derived from equine and bovine plasma, caused allergic reactions when tested in humans and were replaced by products obtained from human plasma (4). Process studies were stiU being carried out in the pilot-plant laboratory at Harvard in December 1941 when the small supply of experimental product was mshed to Hawaii to treat casualties at the U.S. naval base at Pead Harbor. On January 5, 1942 the decision was made to embark on large-scale manufacture at a number of U.S. pharmaceutical plants (4,5). [Pg.526]

Skin. The skin may become contaminated accidentally or, in some cases, materials may be deHberately appHed. Skin is a principal route of exposure in the industrial environment. Local effects that are produced include acute or chronic inflammation, allergic reactions, and neoplasia. The skin may also act as a significant route for the absorption of systemicaHy toxic materials. Eactors influencing the amount of material absorbed include the site of contamination, integrity of the skin, temperature, formulation of the material, and physicochemical characteristics, including charge, molecular weight, and hydrophilic and lipophilic characteristics. The cephalosporins generally cause few side effects (80,132,219—221). Thrombophlebitis occurs as a result of intravenous administration of all cephalosporins. Hypersensitivity reactions related to the cephalosporins are the most common side effects observed, but these are less common than found with the penicillins. The most common adverse effect of the use of penicillins is an allergic reaction which can change from a mild rash to fatal anaphylactic shock in rate cases. Frequendy, the treatment of helminthic diseases requites adjunct medication. Allergic reactions are commonly seen as a result of tissue invasion by worms or as a consequence of anthelmintic therapy. Antihistamines and corticosteroids may be necessary adjuncts to therapy.
