Microbial spoilage of emulsified products is avoided by the inclusion of appropriate amounts of a preservative in the formulation. Infected topical emulsions have been the cause of outbreaks of pseudomonal and other bacterial skin infections. The incorporation of preservatives into pharmaceutical emulsions is not without problems as most agents partition to the oily or micellar phases of complex systems some are inactivated by surfactants. [Pg.249]

Neomycin is a mixture of three compounds produced by fermentation of Streptomyces fradiae, with neomycin B predominating. It is most commonly used in preoperative bowel sanitation and the treatment of enteropathogenic Escherichia coii infections. It also is found in nonprescription ointments and is used topically for treatment of bacterial skin infections. When applied to intact skin, the drug is not absorbed, but when applied to large, denuded areas, systemic absorption occurs with the potential for toxic side effects. It also has seen some use in lowering serum cholesterol. [Pg.1630]

Marine-acquired bacterial skin infections are caused by trauma occurring during water sports or aquatic-related hobbies (Table 4). While these infections are rarely encountered, those caused by Chromobacterium violaceum and Vibrio vulnificus are frequently associated with septicemia and death. [Pg.1075]

Pleuromutilin, a protein synthesis inhibitor, was first isolated from the genus Pleurotus and discovered as potent diterpene antibiotics in 1950. ° Later, several derivatives were discovered and have been used in veterinary and clinic environments. For example, tiamulin was the first pleuromutilin compound to be approved for veterinary use in 1979, followed by valnemulin in 1999. In 2007, retapamu-lin, a topical antibiotic developed by GlaxoSmithKline (London, U.K.), became the first pleuromutilin antibiotics approved for use in humans. It is marketed as an ointment under the brand names Altabax and Altargo. Retapamulin was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of bacterial skin infections such as... [Pg.586]
