Microsporum infection, treatment

Antifungal spectrum The drug is principally fungistatic. It is effective only against the dermatophytes—Trichophyton. Microsporum. and Epidermophyton. It is used in the treatment of severe tinea infections that do not respond to other antifungal agents. 

Tolnaftate is a synthetic antifungal agent with a narrow spectrum of activity which is limited to dermatophytes (Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton spp.). It could be used to treat mild localized dermatophytic infection. For topical application to dogs, tolnaftate is formulated as a 1% cream containing both polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol. The powder aerosol preparation is less likely to be effective for treatment, but could be applied to prevent spread of the infection. 

An evaluation of microcrystalline griseofulvln therapy (oral) in scalp ringwoim using 32R patients emphasizes that successful therapy requires different treatment schedules for nonfluorescent Trichophyton induced infections and those caused by Microsporum species. Althou griseofulvln (iv) is usually given orally (as above) a recent report discloses successful topical treatment of cases of superficial dermato-phytosis with a 5 griseofulvln ointment. 

Tolnaftate (1% cream, solution and gel) is indicated for treatment of tinea pedis (athlete s foot), t. cruris (jock itch), or t. corporis (ringworm) due to infection with Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. tonsurans, Microsporum canis, M. audouini, and Epidermophy ton floccosum, and as treatment for tinea versicolor due to Malassezia furfur.
