Consciousness

As the name implies the company basically rents the rig and crew on a per day basis. Usually the oil company also manages the drilling operation and has full control over the drilling process. This type of contract actually encourages the contractor to spend as much time as acceptable on location . With increased cost consciousness, day rate contracts have become less favoured by most oil companies. 

The amendments shown in Table 2 above should not increase the amount of NDE applied in quality conscious yards and in some cases may give a reduction by eliminating the double checking that can sometimes occur. Other yards may find that a more extensive NDE programme will be required. The benefits obtained from an enhanced inspection scheme should be apparent in the improved fatigue life of the ships.

Although, the notion of molecular dynamics was known in the early turn of the century, the first conscious effort in the use of computer for molecular dynamics simulation was made by Alder and Wainright, who in their paper [1] reported the application of molecular dynamics to realistic particle systems. Using hard spheres potential and fastest computers at the time, they were able to simulate systems of 32 to 108 atoms in 10 to 30 hours. All the methods of obtaining information via the Internet presented above carry one risk - dead links. Although a search term may be found by a search engine in its own website-metadata database, the original link to the website could be broken and the information is lost. In this book a conscious effort has been made to limit the URLs and to reduce the web address to the index page of the seiwer, to avoid this sometimes annoying problem. 

Many of the topics covered in analytical chemistry benefit from the availability of appropriate computer software. In preparing this text, however, I made a conscious decision to avoid a presentation tied to a single computer platform or software package. Students and faculty are increasingly experienced in the use of computers, spreadsheets, and data analysis software their use is, I think, best left to the personal choice of each student and instructor. 

In a world increasingly conscious of the dangers of contact with chemicals, a process that is conducted within the walls of a vacuum chamber, such as the VDP process for parylene coatings, offers great advantages. Provided the vacuum pump exhaust is appropriately vented and suitable caution is observed in cleaning out the cold trap (trace products of the pyrolysis, which may possibly be dangerous, would collect here), the VDP parylene process has an inherently low potential for operator contact with hazardous chemicals. 

Crude preparations of mescaline (61) from peyote were first reported by the Spanish as they learned of its use from the natives of Mexico during the Spanish invasion of that country in the sixteenth century. The colorful history (44) of mescaline has drawn attention to its use as a hallucinogen and even today it is in use among natives of North and South America. Although in connection with dmg abuse complaints, mescaline is considered dangerous, it has been reported (45) that it is not a narcotic nor is it habituating. It was also suggested that its sacramental use in the Native American Church of the United States be permitted since it appears to provoke only visual hallucination while the subject retains clear consciousness and awareness. 

The health-conscious trend toward development of fat replacements (see Eat replacers), reduced salt and MSG intake, and use of artificial sweeteners (qv) to reduce caloric intake has influenced the increase in spice usage. AH of these trends requite spices to compensate for flavor loss or to overcome a perceived or actual difference in flavor. 

Intrusiveness. Workers are likely to alter their behavior, consciously or unconsciously, when they are observed. To the extent that a worker s exposure is related to the worker s actions, this change can distort the representativeness of the evaluation. Measurement methods which require the close presence of the person collecting the sample are more likely to influence the result than samples collected with unobtmsive devices worn by the worker. 

Ammonia is a strong local irritant which also has a corrosive effect on the eyes and the membranes of the pulmonary system. Vapor concentrations of 10,000 ppm are mildly irritating to the skin, whereas 30,000 ppm may cause bums. The physiological effects from inhalation are described in Table 16. Prolonged, intentional exposure to high levels of ammonia is unlikely because its characteristic odor can be detected at levels as low as 1 —5 ppm (94). The real danger occurs when escape is impossible, or the exposure victim has lost consciousness. 

The human body has more than 600 muscles. The body s movement is performed by muscle contractions, which are stimulated by the nervous system. This system links muscle tissue to the spinal cord and brain. The network of nerve cells which carries the brain s signals directs the flow of muscular energy. Most muscular activity occurs beyond the range of the conscious mind. The body, working through the neuromuscular network, manages... 

Finally, the laboratory expends significant effort communicating results to both internal and external customers. Production, quaUty assurance, and purchasing all have various information needs ranging from the simple pass /fail decisions to statistical summaries of the data and suppHer product quahty. Customers expect to receive lot analyses in the form of a COA and often also want their own product-specific information on the document as well. This information can automatically be appHed to the COA if entered into the LIMS. Often, a quaUty-conscious customer wants information about the product in the form of process capabiUty or control charts. Using LIMS, these charts can be provided on demand. 

In an energy-conscious world, SI provides a direct relationship among mechanical, electric, chemical, thermodynamic, molecular, and solar forms of energy. AH power ratings are given in watts. 

Acute benzene poisoning results in CNS depression and is characterized by an initial euphoria followed by staggered gait, stupor, coma, and convulsions. Exposure to approximately 4000 ppm benzene results in complete loss of consciousness. Insomnia, agitation, headache, nausea, and drowsiness may persist for weeks after exposure (126). Continued inhalation of benzene to the point of euphoria has caused irreversible encephalopathy with tremulousness, emotional lability, and diffuse cerebral atrophy (125). In deaths arising from acute exposure, respiratory tract infection, hypo- and hyperplasia of sternal bone marrow, congested kidneys, and cerebral edema have been found at autopsy. 

New packaging and packaging materials seem imminent. New nonnutritive sweeteners promise increased shelf life and improved taste for a calorie conscious society. Easter, more efficient production methods and equipment are being developed every day. Soft drink manufacturers wkl continue to expand markets overseas and attempt to increase per capital consumption in existing markets. 

Ingestion of chloroform is followed immediately by a severe burning in the mouth and throat, pain in the chest and abdomen, and vomiting. Loss of consciousness and Hver injury may foUow depending on the amount swallowed. The tendency of chloroform to produce Hver injury is significantly augmented in alcohoHcs and persons with nutritional deficiencies. 

Ingestion. Ingestion, unless prompt first aid or medical treatment is given, is rapidly fatal 1 mg of cyanide per kilogram of body weight can be fatal. Immediate and repeated adininistration of emetics and regurgitation (if the victim is conscious), followed or accompanied by the first aid and medical treatments described below should be carried out. If the victim is unconscious, stomach lavage should be performed by a physician or trained personnel. 

In prac tice, the existence of a tight cost-control system tends to spread a cost consciousness among the personnel involved in the project. Such an awareness, even in construction-equipment maintenance and job housekeeping, can lead to efficient cost control throughout.
