Shame belongs to a bundle of "self-conscious emotions" embarrass ment, shame, guilt, pride, and prideful ness.25 Of these, embarrassment is caused by the mere exposure to others,26 without any evaluative components. The other four emotions, by contrast, presuppose negative or positive evaluations by oneself or others.
