Self consciousness

As developed in the 1850s, positivism came to be understood as a philosophical belief which held that the methods of natural science offer the only viable way of thinking correctly about human affairs. Accordingly, empirical experience - processed with a self-conscious fear of subjective contamination - served as the basis of all knowledge. Facts, the products of sensory experience, and, by extrapolation, the data derived from machines and instruments built as extensions of that faculty, were first ascertained, and then classified.

Because of the asymmetry of power between science and occultism, and the ever-growing public faith in the authority of science, the members of a borderland institution like the Alchemical Society had to work self-consciously to solidify its public perception as a scientific society. In the mid-eighteenth century in Paris, Macquer and Antoine Baume self-consciously began their chemistry course with a set of general principles rather than facts to "provide links between facts and make it easier for students to learn." They proposed at the same time to "indicate where principles are only suppositions, probabilities, and matter for further research." 16... 

In marked contrast to Dumas s philosophical chemistry is the mode of presentation and the tradition of Lavoisier s Traite elementaire de chimie (1789). Lavoisier self-consciously began his text with observations, not first principles, stating that "chemistry is an incomplete science, not like geometry." The new nomenclature that he and his colleagues had developed is claimed to be based in a "natural order of ideas," not in metaphysics.23... 

The lack of dynamic models and rigorous mathematics makes nineteenth-century chemistry a different science from physics, but it is no less methodologically sophisticated. Chemists employed varieties of signs, metaphors, and conventions with self-conscious examination and debates among themselves. Nineteenth-century chemists were neither militant empiricists nor naive realists. These chemists were relatively unified in their focus on problems and methods that provided a common core for the chemical discipline, and the language and imagery they used strongly demarcated mid-nineteenth-century chemistry from the field of mid-nineteenth-century physics and natural philosophy. 

Lespieau s may have been the first professorship of "theoretical chemistry" anywhere. There was not a chair of theoretical chemistry in England, for example, until 1931.40 That Lespieau wanted to have this title demonstrates his self-consciousness about the need for chemical "theories," not just chemical empiricism, to renew French chemistry. He had the sense that he was putting organic chemistry at the Sorbonne and the Ecole Normale on a new and different track. 

The joint memoirs of Prevost and Kirrmann self-consciously presented a general theory of organic chemistry that constituted an application of physical methods and principles to the problem of organic reaction mechanisms. However, the language system devised by Prevost and Kirrmann was not adopted by chemists in general, and that part of their notation which was new was not used outside France. Indeed, there was very little interest in their work inside France. 

Robert Lespieau s aim to establish a disciplinary specialization of "chemical theories" in France was partially realized in the work of some of his students, especially Dupont, Prevost, and Kirrmann. For the first time, a clearly defined research school in France practiced the art of "theoretical chemistry" in their study of organic structure and reaction mechanisms. They self-consciously employed physical methods and apparatus, and they stayed in contact with a small network of physicists who were teachers, friends of Lespieau, or immediate colleagues. They had a laboratory terrain that was the home meeting place, no matter what their current affiliation. They had a common history that could be traced back generation by generation in the Ecole Normale laboratory to Berthollet, the "father" of chemical mechanics. 

However, by the 1920s, as we have seen, a self-conscious use of electron theory in a dynamical interpretation of the old static chemical molecule recovered dynamical theoretical foundations for organic chemists in what became the disciplinary specialization of physical organic chemistry. The theory of electron valency and organic reaction mechanisms, in particular, the theory of mesomerism, developed as a new theoretical chemistry, a little prior to wave mechanics, along a largely independent track. 

In contrast, Bohr s use of the word "shells" and Langmuir s use of the term "sheaths" in place of "orbits" discarded the old gravitational analogy for electron energy levels and electron motions. Mulliken s invention of the word "orbital" self-consciously fit his theory within the old physical tradition going back to Newton but simultaneously asserted the discovery of a new theory to inaugurate a "Mulliken era" in chemistry.
